David Liebenberg and Sarah Newberry Moore Qualify US for 2024 Olympics in Nacra 17 Class

Congratulations to Richmond Yacht Club’s David Liebenberg and Sarah Newberry Moore, who are one step closer to representing the US in the 2024 Olympics in France. Along with Daniela Moroz, who won a gold at the Pan American Games in Algarrobo, Chile, David is another Bay Area Olympian who, with his skipper Sarah, earned a silver medal in Chile, thereby qualifying the US for an Olympic berth in the Nacra 17 class. They will move on to compete in the US selection trials in Marseille, with the goal of becoming the US representatives in 2024.

Sarah wrote about the team’s success this year in a recent newsletter, stating, “2023 has been an epic year for our team. We have sailed in six major championships, and in four of them secured a top-10 finish. Whoa! Best year ever for USA 50. Four days ago, at the Pan American Games, we secured a berth for the USA in the Nacra 17 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!! This is a massive step for our team, and we are beyond excited. Huge goal achieved!”

She continued, “Our path to the Games is looking good. We have been the top American team at every event this year with a margin. We are training to be medal contenders, and your support is used to its absolute maximum to contribute to this goal. Please contact us directly if you would like more insight into our detailed budget.”

The US had great success at the Pan Am Games in Algarrobo, Chile, at the end of October/early November. The total US Sailing Team medal count was nine, with four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Team USA left Algarrobo with the most medals and the most gold medals of the 27 participating countries.

David grew up sailing out of Richmond on his parents’ Express 27 Friday and sailing in the RYC junior program. You can read more about David’s Olympic sailing path in Christine Weaver’s interview here. You can learn more and contribute to Sarah and David’s campaign here.

Bay Area Sailors Cast Off Into the Holiday Spirit

The holiday season is making itself present (get it?) in the Bay Area as the sailing community opens its door for everything from movies to art shows to live music and lighted boat parades.

First up, to start the Thanksgiving week, is a screening of the Sausalito Working Waterfront Coalition’s film Tour of Sausalito’s Marinship: A Working Waterfront at Risk on November 20 at 6:00 p.m. The film gives you a glimpse into the treasure of innovation and creativity that is hidden in plain sight in Sausalito’s working waterfront, and, introduces many of the craftspeople who are making it all happen. This group is very active in supporting its community, so we encourage you to go along and show your support, too!

Tickets are available at the door.

Oakland and Encinal Yacht Clubs are delighted to announce the 47th Annual Lighted Yacht Parade on December 2, at 5:30 p.m. In addition to creating a magical evening of lights, the parade organizers partner with the Oakland Firefighters Random Acts of Kindness and the Alameda County Community Food Bank to generate donations of food, unwrapped toys, or money at designated drop sites. These donations go a long way toward providing food and toys to deserving kids and families during the holiday season. Last year’s event generated over $2000 in cash donations and in toy and food donations.

Skippers who would like to participate in the parade, or anyone who wants to donate, please visit www.lightedyachtparade.com.

And for those who missed it last time around, J.R. Roessl, whose story we shared in our September issue, “A Boat and Life Launched on S.F. Bay,” will be speaking tonight at Sausalito Books by the Bay. Roessl’s memoir, Unmoored, tells the story of growing up in the Bay Area boating community, while her parents spent nearly three years building the boat that would take Roessl and her sisters on a life-changing adventure. You can meet the author and hear some of her personal story tonight at 5:00 p.m.

Read about J. R. Roessl in the September issue of Latitude 38.

PSA: Security Zones Established During San Francisco APEC Conference

The Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies have established security zones around the San Francisco waterfront during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference this week.

The 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference is being held in San Francisco from November 14 through November 18, 2023. To ensure the safety of participants and waterways users on the San Francisco Bay, the Coast Guard has enacted regulated areas, published in the Federal Register and advertised by local and broadcast notice to mariners. The Coast Guard and law enforcement vessels will be patrolling the regulated areas to ensure all APEC events are conducted safely.

ACTIVE SECURITY ZONES:

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO BAY

The South San Francisco Bay security zone, which is depicted on “Chart 1,” will be enforced at all times on Tuesday, November 14, through Saturday, November 18. Vessel traffic will be restricted along the shoreline from Oyster Point to Candlestick Point. This is to ensure the safety and security of APEC participants. No vessel will be permitted to enter the security zone at any time without requesting permission from the Captain of the Port San Francisco. Vessel traffic will be restricted from entering within 200 yards of Pier 27/29 in the city of San Francisco. This is to ensure the safety and security of APEC participants. No vessel will be permitted to enter the security zone at any time without requesting permission from the Captain of the Port San Francisco. Permission may be requested through the 24-hour Command Center at (415) 399-3432.

EXPLORATORIUM, PIER 15/17

The Exploratorium security zone, which is depicted on “Chart 3,” will be enforced from 6 a.m. until midnight on Wednesday, November 15. Vessel traffic will be restricted from entering within 1,000 yards of the Exploratorium at San Francisco Pier 15/17. This is to ensure the safety and security of APEC participants. No vessel will be permitted to enter the security zone at any time without requesting permission from the Captain of the Port San Francisco.
