David Liebenberg and Sarah Newberry Moore Qualify US for 2024 Olympics in Nacra 17 Class

Congratulations to Richmond Yacht Club’s David Liebenberg and Sarah Newberry Moore, who are one step closer to representing the US in the 2024 Olympics in France. Along with Daniela Moroz, who won a gold at the Pan American Games in Algarrobo, Chile, David is another Bay Area Olympian who, with his skipper Sarah, earned a silver medal in Chile, thereby qualifying the US for an Olympic berth in the Nacra 17 class. They will move on to compete in the US selection trials in Marseille, with the goal of becoming the US representatives in 2024.

Sarah wrote about the team’s success this year in a recent newsletter, stating, “2023 has been an epic year for our team. We have sailed in six major championships, and in four of them secured a top-10 finish. Whoa! Best year ever for USA 50. Four days ago, at the Pan American Games, we secured a berth for the USA in the Nacra 17 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!! This is a massive step for our team, and we are beyond excited. Huge goal achieved!”

She continued, “Our path to the Games is looking good. We have been the top American team at every event this year with a margin. We are training to be medal contenders, and your support is used to its absolute maximum to contribute to this goal. The US had great success at the Pan Am Games in Algarrobo, Chile, at the end of October/early November. The total US Sailing Team medal count was nine, with four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Team USA left Algarrobo with the most medals and the most gold medals of the 27 participating countries.
