World Sailing Awards Nominations Open
World Sailing will award three new honors for 2018. Nominations are now open for Rolex World Sailor of the Year, but also for the following:
The Racing Sailboat of the Year Award for "outstanding boat design, innovative concepts and ground-breaking technological advancements that are changing the face of sailing, pioneering change across the world," will be presented to a boat that has been scored in an international race for the first time between January 1, 2017, and September 1, 2018. Hurricane Lane Approaches Hawaii
There’s trouble brewing in paradise. Hurricane Lane is traveling outside the ‘normal’ lanes of travel for Pacific hurricanes, which generally stay south of the Hawaiian Islands. Hurricane Lane — which is now a rare Pacific Category 5 storm — is packing winds up to 160 mph near the center. More »

Tales of the Delta, Part 1
Jillian Cripps and her mom, Gig Kerr, paddled an inflatable Sea Eagle kayak in Owl Harbor’s Dinghy Poker Run. Gig’s drive to Sea-Tac from the far reaches of the Olympic Peninsula was slowed by wildfire, then her flight was delayed by the tragic actions of a Horizon Air employee who stole a plane and crashed it. 48 North Donated to NW Maritime Center
The Pacific Northwest sailing rag 48° North, based in Seattle, has been for sale for a while, as owners Richard Hazelton and Michael Collins want to retire. Yesterday, the editor, Joe Cline, announced that the magazine is being donated to the nonprofit Northwest Maritime Center, located in Port Townsend, WA. More »
The Difference Between the Coasts
While summers in San Francisco are known for cool, brisk and foggy breezes, the coast of Maine is just about the opposite — except for the fog part. Maine’s fog, by contrast, tends to be warm, humid and accompanied by gentler breezes. More »
