Cruisers Attacked in St. Lucia

Retired cruisers, Roger (62) and Margaret (60) Pratt were attacked on their yacht January 18 while moored at the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Up to three men apparently rowed up to the couple’s yacht, Magnetic Attraction, and attacked Mr. Pratt while he defended his wife. The attackers beat and stabbed Mr. Pratt several times, while also injuring Mrs. Pratt. Before they left they threw Mr. Pratt’s body overboard. He was discovered by his wife soon afterwards, floating in the water, dead.

The British couple were enjoying a long-planned year-long cruise around the world, and had recently celebrated Mrs. Pratt’s 60th birthday on the island. In what is certainly an unfortunate circumstance gone terribly wrong, the Pratt’s had planned to get official clearance to leave the day before the incident, but due to bureaucratic issues, bad luck, and perhaps incompetence (according to Mrs. Pratt), the couple was forced to stay through the weekend.

“It is with much regret that I and other industry partners have learnt of the unfortunate incident which has resulted in the loss of life of a visitor to our shores," said St. Lucian tourism minister, Lorne Theophilus.

“This is an active investigation and law enforcement is leading the charge in an attempt to bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice speedily. Law enforcement officials have briefed myself and other senior tourism officials on aspects of the case although I am not at liberty to share some of those details with you at this time.”
