Racing and Sailing Preview
Latitude 38's publisher recently noticed that we have a Leap Saturday this year. "Sounds like a good theme for a party!" he said. "You won’t be able to sail on a Saturday, February 29, again until 2048."
Latitude 38 Crew List Party
Meet and greet fellow sailors. Find crew or get on a boat. Thursday, March 5, 6-9 p.m. Held at the spectacular Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco.
In Old News . . .
Another AC75 has crashed and burned, so to speak. A few days ago (it’s not clear to us exactly when) Luna Rossa dismasted while practicing off the coast of Marina di Capitana, Italy.

Hands-on Experience
On January 11-12, Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey hosted the second US Sailing two-day Offshore Safety at Sea Seminar. The 48 participants came from as far away as London, Anchorage and Manhattan.
Three Bridge Fiasco
While straining to see anything in gray nothingness, a skipper who has 20+ years of Three Bridge Fiascos under his keel commented: "This is the craziest Fiasco ever!"
When you drop everything . . .
On Saturday, January 4th, I watched as Seaward’s crew brought their vessel neatly to the dock at the Newport Sea Scout base in Southern California.

Names that make you laugh
Boat names, along with boat design, have evolved in a more radical direction.
A Question for the Nation
Sorry for the short notice, everyone, but The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, is seeking public comment on the “sunsetting” process by which paper charts will be phased out.
In need of a dredge?
We don’t want to make too big of a deal about the completely normal seasonal tides ebbing and flowing into and out of our winter lives.

A heartfelt letter
Hello Latitude 38. I am an active sailor with an Ericson 34 berthed at Marina Bay, and I work with sometimes-severely disabled people in a skilled nursing facility in San Rafael.
Sailing in a Nor'easterly
It only happens in the winter, and that's part of the fun. Setting a spinnaker to head toward the Golden Gate is an unusual experience for many San Francisco Bay racers, but it was all part of a pretty idyllic first weekend of the Corinthian Yacht Club Midwinters.

Hidden on the West Coast
In what has become something of a New Year’s ritual, we headed down to San Luis Obispo on December 31, 2019, to see friends, and were again charmed by the beachy, sailory nooks that are Cayucos, Morro Bay and Port San Luis.

Breaking the News to the Boss
I was presented with an opportunity to go sailing, but not just for a weekend or a day — this was a three-month commitment. While I admit the decision wasn’t too difficult to make, I did experience a period of anguish over the chaos that would ensue once I told my boss I was going.
