First Vendée Finishers to Arrive Tomorrow
Barring any major breakages or accidents, the first two Vendée Globe racers are slated to cross the finish line in Les Sables d’Olonne, France, sometime tomorrow. The race’s ‘golden boy’, François Gabart (MACIF), is on track to not only cross the line first, but to also break the world record by solo circumnavigating — his first time, by the way — in just 78 days. Crime and Ignorance
Dinghies are often stolen in bunches. We can remember epidemics in Sausalito, San Diego Bay, and any number of islands in the Caribbean. Last year police broke up one of the biggest dinghy outboard theft rings ever in Long Beach. More »
Martinez Marina Dredged
For the last several years, the sight of a boat grounded at the entrance to Martinez Marina hasn’t been unusual. Now freshly dredged, most boats can enter at all stages of the tide. More »

The Big Chill

Stamm Retires from Vendée Globe
For three long days, Bernard Stamm has been running his IMOCA 60 Cheminées Poujoulat on emergency energy rations after a UFO disabled both of his hydrogenerators. He was able to contact his shore team only once a day to determine a plan of action, which ended up with his friend Unaï Basurko — a Basque sailor who happened to be in Ushuaia — delivering diesel to Stamm after his Cape Horn rounding hours ago. Enjoying the iPad Hot Spot
Cruisers in Mexico primarily use two ways to get internet access. One is wifi, which is great — assuming you have access to it. That’s often not the case on a boat, however, which is why we and others have, for several years, been using modems from TelCel for our computers. More »
