A Visit to the Bird’s Nest

A bevy of Bird boats flocked together for spring maintenance recently at Pt. Richmond’s KKMI boatyard.

San Francisco’s Bird boats have enjoyed a long and storied past. But, it seems that the future of the Birds on the Bay is brighter than it’s been in years. Pictured above are five of eight Birds recently hauled out at KKMI for some bottom paint and other necessary maintenance and restoration work. According to Bill Claussen, owner of Curlew, Cuckoo and Widgeon, he and other Bird owners just happened to be hauling at the same time, so they decided to have them lined up, take some pictures and have a BBQ with friends and family.

The Birds have an ambitious season planned this year. At least seven of them will be on the starting line for the complete WBRA series, SFYC’s Fall Classic, the Master Mariners Regatta, the Jessica Cup and the Woodies Invitational.

Vallejo YC’s Martha Blanchfield reminds us that there are only 10 days until the 115th running of the annual Great Vallejo Race.
If a ‘picture is worth a thousand words,’ what’s a video worth? No matter how many times mariners are warned about the dangers of not wearing an outboard kill-switch cord around their wrists when operating their outboard-powered inflatables, the message doesn’t seem to get through.
