00:02

We actually have a podcast called Good Jibes.  Oh, I’ve seen that. It’s really quite excellent.  You’re on it right now.

00:14

Ahoy and welcome to a special edition  on location Good Jibes podcast brought to you by me, Ryan Folland, here in Newport Beach for the one, the only Newport Beach International Boat Show. First part is finding parking and I’ve been driving around for about 20 minutes trying to find a spot. I missed that. I see it. I miss it. I go one more time around.

00:42

And then I decided that I was just going to go to the Blue Water Grill for the valet parking. And when the lady asked me if I was going to Blue Water Grill, I lied. I said, yes. But I’m just here setting up my equipment in the car. She’s not going to know. It’s going to be OK. And I ate at Blue Water the other week, so it’s pretty much the same. I’m getting loaded up with all my stuff, my mobile zoom and my microphones in my little camera bag. And I’m going to hit the docks.

01:09

I’m going talk with some boat owners. I’m going to talk with people selling boats that I can’t afford, which is awesome. And I’m going to talk with some salty sailors. We’re going to be basically representing Latitude 38 here on the docks, looking at all these cool boats, sailboats, big boats, power boats, you name it. I’m excited. I was here last year, and it was a blast. I’m here again, and hopefully it’ll be that much better. It’s getting hot here in the car. I am about to, uh,

01:36

Well, I will give the car to the attendee for valet who will park because she thinks I’m going to Bluewater. But secretly, you are joining me to the International Boat Show here in Newport Beach. All right, this is going to be fun. Here we go.

01:52

I’m back and I have an unfortunate update. I was told by the manager of the valet here at Blue Water Grill. They literally said, if you leave the premises, they have cameras and they’re watching. And he said, are you going to the boat show? I was like, I’m going to Blue Water Grill. And he’s like, if you’re going to the boat show, he’s like, I want to believe you. But if you are going to the boat show, we have cameras. And if you leave the Blue Water property, they’re going to call.

02:22

and then your car is going to be towed. So guess what? My initial plan has failed. I’m headed out to go find a parking spot. This is what we have to go through in order to get to the boats. So wish me luck.  Here we go. And by the way, I’m excited for you to join on this Good Jibes episode. And Good Jibes is a podcast brought to you by Latitude 38 to help understand what sailing is all about. And sometimes sailing is about trying to find the boat show. So right now, I got to go find a parking spot.

02:51

I mean, hey, it’s hard to find a spot for your boat. It’s hard to find your spot for a car at a boat show. But thus I digress. All right. I’m going back out on the streets. Wish me luck.

03:04

Apparently a lot of people want to go to this boat show because  there are no parking spots  anywhere. I’m like, I don’t know, maybe a  mile or two from the boat show at this point. And I’m just surrounded by a bunch of cars that are trying to find a place to park. Maybe next time I need to take a boat to the boat show. Mental note.

03:28

Oh my God, I found it. I found the anchoring spot for my car that is very far away. So I might have to ride my skateboard to get to the boat show, but we’re getting there bit by bit, boat by boat. I need to now pay for parking. Let’s go.

03:45

It’s official. I am on the move. I have found a place to park my car and I’m pretty sure I locked it, but I’ve got my skateboard because it’s like a 25 minute walk and why not as well just like rip it on the sidewalk to the boat show. There are lots of yachty people around. I’m not the only person here in town who wants to see big boats because I like big boats and I cannot lie. All right. I’m going to focus on skating.

04:14

Here’s a little skating sound.

04:18

That’s me carving on the sidewalk here in Newport. Headed to the boat show. I’d like big boats that I cannot lie. No other brother can deny. it, and it, and a sailboat’s in your face you get, bro. All right. Ooh, I see parking tickets on cars. This is a real thing. All right, I gotta focus. All right, nothing like skating through a crosswalk. Lots of folks. Retail and restaurants are open. That is the word.

04:46

Street is closed, security guard, let see if I can escape by.  No rolling, all right.  I knew it, we got caught.  But we’re here.  We’ve made it  to the strip.  Two.

05:00

The International Boat Show. All right. We got lots of yachty people. It’s hot. I see name tags. I can smell the boats. And before you get boats,  you get cars. That’s right. We got Porsches.  Another Porsche.  And another Porsche.  This is classy. But these Porsches are missing sails.  Oh.

05:30

All right, I see the line, I gotta get my media pass. I’ll be back with you in a flash. All right, I found somebody who’s gonna give me my media pass  and it is busy. I feel surrounded by,  I don’t know, I feel like this is a Mediterranean island with people, we got drinks,  I see martinis, I see spritz,  I see that’s gotta be a blue moon. We’re here at the Malibu Farm as I wait for my entry ticket.

06:00

I’ve got my media pass and I am on the ground, on the move, about to enter the main dock. Flash my credentials.  Credentials, credentials. This is the dock. How’s it going here today, sir? Is everybody being under control? Everybody’s under control. Wristbands, credentials, everything’s set. All right, do see a boat here you want to buy? I’ve seen quite a few. All right, sounds good. Well, thank you for keeping everybody safe.  We got people laughing.

06:30

Here a boat, there a boat, everywhere a boat, boat. Newport Beach has lots of boats. And you know what? They build these docks every year, which is crazy. Okay, I feel like a kid in a candy shop. I see engines, I see masts. I might go find the masts. We got music, we got people lounging. You can smell, you can smell the money in the air because there’s lots of boats that are lots of money. Everybody seems chipper.

06:59

I do know that when you go to a boat show, you take your shoes off when you get on the boat. So this time I’m wearing my sandals. Way easier. Oh gosh. That one, $4,799,999. It’s not bad. Geez. Mind the gap or cruising.

07:22

Wow, those are big engines. 450 V8, 5.6 liter.  That looks nice. I’m just cruising. Well, it’s pretty packed. Lots of people. Oh my God.  600 horses, they fit into that thing. Whoa, go Mercury. Insane. ah Hans, our friends at Hans.

07:46

Is this your boat? Are you selling it? Are you just hanging out?

07:53

Some guys are selling, are you guys selling this thing? Somebody want to come talk to me about it? I’m here from Good Jibes, a little live podcast recording. All right, what’s going on, buddy? My name is Ryan. I’m here with Good Jibes. We’re a sailing podcast. Three years or so, we’ve got close to 300 episodes and we’re part of Latitude 38. Are you familiar with the magazine? Absolutely. So you’ve heard of Latitude 38? I have heard of Latitude 38. Yes. Pick up the publications from time to time. Well, we appreciate that. And did you know we have a podcast?

08:22

I did not. Well, good jobs. We are the podcast and we like to tell me what I’m about to step on because this is boat built in Germany. It’s a Hansa. It’s a 38 foot Hansa model is 388. This is very, very open,  very open boat. There’s no lights below. It’s all natural light. No lights below.

08:44

Well, there are lights below, but they’re not on is what I’m saying. I don’t have lights in my boat because she’s a 1977 Cal 34 and I’m in the process of replacing the lights in the boat. But all natural light, you’re The old classic. Yes.  So step me through this here.  This boat is designed to sail swiftly,  shorthanded.  All the lines are lead back to common electric winch on both sides. All the way back, yeah.

09:10

So what do you have to do? You don’t have to do anything. You just hang out? anything. You have to relax and sail fast. Nice. Well, we have other people that are looking to get on. Do you want to take us through and do a little tour? A little walk and talk? All right. All right.

09:25

Lots of beautiful teak. We also have somebody hanging out and enjoying here. Is this the boat that you’re gonna buy? I hope so. She does sailboat racing. Ah, very cool. So we’re heading into the cockpit here.

09:41

Now what is this? This is just like glass. Are these, uh these are part of the… It’s part of the biotech construction. It’s a lexan of some sort. Nice.

09:52

This has a sail drive, a GANMAR diesel. Okay. How many horsepower? 39 horsepower. This feels like a high level apartment building in here. Or like an apartment complex or a condo. Two staterooms, one head, lots of storage on the vessel.

10:12

This is another area, open now, but what she’s sending is a cockpit storage. be a third. There was a model that has a third stateroom here. How much are we selling this thing for? This boat is offered for $345,000. Okay. And is that including taxes? just kidding. Taxes I don’t know about, but this is the last Hanza.

10:39

that Seattle Yachts has in their inventory of boats. So Seattle Yachts has offices  in Anacortes, Seattle, Alameda Bay in the Bay Area, Marina Del Rey, San Diego.  So they move the boats around and they have,  so when  a boat is ordered,  it might go to Anacortes or it might go to San Diego. So this boat is in Marina Del Rey. Okay, and the chances are it’ll be sold today or tomorrow, right? Well, hopefully. Nice.

11:08

Well, this is beautiful. Again, it’s basically just like my boat, but like 50 or 60 years newer. How do you think she’d sail up against the Cal 34 1977? She’d sail circles around. Awesome. Well, hey, I got And I’m a fan of Cal. Those are good old boats. What does this thing cruise at? If it’s under nice wind? You’re going to do, you know, seven, eight knots under normal, you know, everyday conditions. Nice. Well, I’ll just make sure I’m racing downwind with extra sail.

11:38

with my engine on to win the race. This has a self-tending head sail plus an in-mast furling main. So that cuts down a little bit on the performance. Yeah. The snack pack with battens and a bigger head sail would certainly increase. Well, that last interview we ran out of battery. So I’m not sure exactly how much we got of it, but it was a sweet Hans and I fell in love with it. I know she’s going to do circles around bingo, but

12:08

It’s OK. We got to have goals, right? All right, we got some more battery and we are headed out. I’m in search of some more masts. I see some masts and they’re quite far away, surrounded by big boats.

12:21

All kinds of

12:49

Of course there’s tons of resources out there, but LATTA 238 does have a page on our website called Heading South.  And we also have LATTA 238’s First Timers Guide to Mexico  available to read online on the Heading South page  or a printed copy  that is available to purchase in our online store. There’s a lot to know, but LATTA238.com is a good place to start.

13:13

Ahoy! I realize you don’t have business cards, but I’m here from Good Jives. Have you ever heard of Latitude 38, the magazine? Yeah, I have. All right. Well, we are the Good Jives podcast by Latitude 38. Do you want to say hi? Sure. Hello. How’s it going? Well, I’m looking here at a beautiful boat that you’re sketching out and the sign says custom yacht paintings. Tell us a little bit about this. I am with Newport Yachts over here. They’ve commissioned me to paint one of their boats behind me. Right here is the Marbella.

13:41

Nice. And some just out here with acrylics and the sunshine. Can’t complain. Now you don’t paint boats full time. This is just a gig and then it’s a little side project. What do you normally paint when you’re painting? I actually paint all sorts of things, whatever strikes my fancy, but I’m actually a fashion designer full time. OK. You ever paint sailboats? I have yet to paint a sailboat. Yet to paint a sailboat? On the list next. Well, I’ll give you my information and I’d be happy to be the first boat. She’s a 1977 Cal 34. You won’t see her at this boat show.

14:09

but she’s classy. Oh, can’t wait. What does something like this run if I want a picture, a nice painting to bingo? This one right here on paper, I’m doing about 350. Okay. It of depends on the level of realism or how big or if it’s on a canvas. Yeah. Little variables. So I can have you paint my boat bigger and more luxurious than it is. course. It’s Fully custom. Right. Okay. Awesome. Your name on there and everything. We’ll share how people can get in touch with you. They want to reach out because we’re talking to people with sailboats and it’s a huge market for you here.

14:38

currently getting just starting out in the market. So I only have my personal Instagram, which is just my name, which is Bailey. Don’t play it down. You have your personal Instagram. This is awesome.  But that’s at Bailey’s, which is B-A-Y-L-I-E-S. All right. And then is your dog’s name Bailey? That’s Cash. Oh, Cash and Bailey. Cash is very excited. Cash, what do you have to say about this? He intently sniffed the microphone. I think he’s happy.  Well, I’ll let you get back to this. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.  And have fun painting.

15:08

There you go. Get your yacht painted at Bailey’s. Let’s go.

15:14

Well, here’s a sailboat that I’d like to paint. What is this? It’s definitely for sale, cruising yachts. A Bavaria. Gentlemen, you look lonely, like you’re looking for somebody to talk to. How’d you like to talk to about 40,000 sailors across the

15:36

West Coast. Have you heard of Latitude 38? This little publication has been around for 40 years. I’ve been reading it probably for about 22, 24 years. Awesome. It’s probably one of the best magazines I’ve ever had an opportunity to encounter. Not only are the stories great, but the advertising programs that you see, I find great boats in there. Yes. We have a lot of clients. The class he classifies here. Hold that a little closer. This is good stuff. We want our people to hear this. So you said you hated Latitude 30. I’m just kidding. Yeah. You know, until I really learned what it was all about.

16:04

Yeah, you too many times people talk to you about Latitude 38, but unless you actually take it, pick it up, look at it, then you start to realize the incredible content that is brought in from from all the editors for this program. Yeah, it’s really like community driven. get a lot of stories that are real stories from real sailors. And we actually have a podcast called Good Jives. Oh, I’ve seen that. It’s really quite excellent. Well, you’re on it right now. Yeah. I mean, we haven’t edited it and stuff like. But the most important thing about your publication is it’s real. Yes.

16:34

It’s all about people and it’s not it’s not a lot of hype. It’s not trying to play games with you here. You need to buy this or you need to buy that. You read these articles about people and how they’ve encountered really rough situations and how they got through it. And then the other ones had a first time out there and they’re experiencing something that they’ve only heard about from all their friends. You read the articles about how they’ve stepped up and done these things and they look at their friends and go, you can’t imagine what you’re missing. Yes.

17:02

and it gets more people into sailing and they may not start off on this beast, but they work up to it.  That’s probably the best thing about it. know, everybody should.  Everybody buys a boat that they think they is the right size. Right. But then again, about two years later, they have what is called two foot items.  And we need to step up to this a little bit bigger boat. Yeah. And then about three or four years later, they’re going, you know, maybe we should consider going cruising. So now we step up to another little bit bigger boat. Right. And all the people behind us are buying the boats that we had.

17:32

Because they had the same impression of what they want to do and where they were headed. Yes. Well, so I’ve got a 1977 Cal 34. So this boat is about what, two feet bigger than mine? That’s about right. No, but really, this is a this is a beast. How big is she and what is she? This is a Bavaria 45. And one of the unique aspects of the Bavaria 45 are you notice there’s no table in the middle of the cockpit? Yes. Wow. Makes it easy to walk through. You have a clear a clear pathway. Always.

18:00

And you’ll also notice that we have a full seating area across the entire back of the boat. Whereas most boats, you don’t have that. So now I can have I can have three or four people just sitting and relaxing in the back of the boat. And the drop swim. Right. And the drop swim. So you notice that we have a little walkway so that we can get down there  so that people don’t have to try to climb over to get down. It’s an easy walkway.

18:24

and we have handles so it makes it really nice and What is this, a little barbecue? A This is a little barbecue out back, something that we threw in that makes it life a lot easier. And the neatest part about it is when you’re using the barbecue, if you’re standing out back, you’re still in touch with everybody that’s in front of you. Yeah, where’s the Dodger?

18:41

The Dodger,  there is no Dodger. No, they’re in LA. Oh, uh I’m sorry.  Yes.  But I guess you wouldn’t take as much weather over the bow with something like this. In my little bingo, I live or die by my Dodger. Well, the thing you want to  wrap uh into  consideration here, these are brand new boats. And everybody has a preference on color,  height, design. So once you purchase the boat,

19:08

We will then build it to your specification. OK, so it’s not that it’s made without it. It’s like off the car lot. And people would put a Dodger on here.  Oh, absolutely. OK. I know some hardcore sailors who are like, no Dodger at all. Come here for a second. I’ll show you something else that really is interesting. way, I’d like to say we’re walking directly into the companion way. Absolutely. the little scoot. Little scoot that I’ve done on all the other boats. Nope. All right. Notice there are no winches. You’re right. It looks very clean. Everything is in back here by the back of the boat where the captain is. They’re back here where you need them.

19:38

I don’t want to have to leave from here, walk up here, and then do something, and then try to get back here. Welcome to my world, yes. Exactly. Yeah. Okay, so you can single-handle this thing? Ah, totally. I brought it down by myself.  I’ve sailed him by myself. The reason being, I have an N-mass furling system,  which you can see. And if you look over my other shoulder, you’ll notice that it’s a self-tacking head sail. Tell me about that. I’ve heard that before, but you’re basically…

20:04

What, you just tack and it tacks? You don’t have to worry about… See, you want to walk up? I’ll show you. Yeah, let’s check it out. You got some leash here? Yeah, come stand here.

20:16

The one thing you’ll also notice, you know how we move on this boat and the boat does not move. It’s not it’s not affected by us. OK, so you notice how flat my decks are? Yes. Most of them have a hump. Yeah. I am totally usable area. Totally. Yeah. That’s where I was headed. So as we come up front.

20:34

Here,  again, all flat, all usable area. This is a self-tacking headsail.  So no matter what I do,  whatever way I go, it tacks for me.  I don’t have to change any lines. I don’t have to change any ropes. I don’t have to do anything at all but other than point and go. OK, so then is there such a thing where you get this advanced and then  you’re out there sailing but you’re not really doing much?  When you’re at this level, that’s what you’re after, kind of?

21:02

Well, no, it’s not that you’re after it. You want the  ease of execution. It’s just because I’m going to be quite older when I can afford this.  But, you know, I mean, uh I can tack  and just go anywhere I want to go. And I don’t have to have lines coming through the cockpit on both sides. I don’t have to sit there and crank winches or use electric winches. It looks like somebody took like a cake knife and just chopped the top off. It is so uniquely flat across the whole thing. Exactly. I was trying to see if I could see one that…

21:30

that had a uh trust me,  my boat has one. I know exactly what you’re talking about. A lot of windows too. A lot of natural light, I would assume, inside. Well, natural light and also beautiful cross ventilation because I’ve got side windows. I got top windows. The most important thing is you want to move air. Yeah. You know,  and then obviously this I put on this one. I put full heat, air and generators on board. OK, generators, plural.  Well, let me rephrase that generator. OK. On my other boats, I have doubles. OK.

21:59

But on this one, I have full heat and generator on board, which gives you really access to anything you want, depending upon what the weather is.  However, with the opening ports that I have here,  one, two, three, four, five, I have five, six open ports. That’s going to give me fantastic ventilation through the boat. That is fantastic. Should we go peek inside real quick? Let’s go. All right.

22:22

And you’re just dwarfing this powerboat next to you, which is kind of nice because everybody seems to have these big boats, the big dwarfing boats. Well, the thing is, these are all my boats also. Nice. This. This has an interesting little tuck in tail to it. Tell us real quick. What are we looking at here? This is a 42 foot. This is a 42 foot Bavaria with the upper fly bridge. It’s got just missing the mast. Yeah. And it gets thirsty too. I guess so. Right.

22:52

Yeah, this is a great boat. You see a little canopy out front from people that can lay out there and catch some sun and get burned. So come on back down here. Let me see if I can get down here.

23:07

Excellent nice one handed there. Yep

23:13

Two things about before we go down. One, you see how large the opening is. It makes it very easy. It’s way back. don’t smack your head. went on a boat, just the other guy gave me a tour, smacked his head. This did not happen. Here’s the other thing. You know, we have the companion way doors that everybody tried to figure out where to put them. Yeah, I have the slots, the wood slots. have to figure out where to put them. All we do is go like this.

23:37

Okay, so literally the cat that cover hatch  which is like the what would you call it? is the covered hatch it goes down inside the boat. And you just pull it up like a it just locks in place.  that’s Way cool. Very mean smart. And you have a nice angle of attack of the steps. Yes, it doesn’t look like too much of a ladder. Right. Handholds. Yes, everywhere. Fantastic handholds going down.

24:02

So now that you’re down on the inside of the boat,  what you have here is a almost 16 feet wide.  And the really interesting thing, if you were to sit there and I sit over there, it’s like sitting in a living room. You’ve got that much space. A lot of teak in here, a lot of wood, beautiful.  Notice the headroom. Yes, yes. I’ve got six foot six, six foot seven headroom in here. Very cool. The other really nice thing that we like about the Bavaria  is all the refrigeration system.

24:32

We have double refrigeration here. And if we have additional overflow, I end up having another over here so that can pick up. I got an ice box. I got an ice box. Very cool. This is a three-state room boat. As you can see, how much headroom you have. Yeah, even in the app, definitely. Yeah, the old days, it used to be very low and you crawled in and we used to call them coffin beds because it felt so tight. have one of those. I know exactly what talking about. Again, we have another beautiful side on here.

25:02

Coming back around, this is the one thing that’s really nice. I want you to  close that door. Okay.  Oh, it’s like a  soft close, like it just closes. Yes. It kind of feels, it sounds like a Porsche.  Ooh, that’s nice. And then you feel, there is no movement. That’s how well finished. Secondly, look how thick the door is. About two inches. Right. The average door is about this way. Yes. So at Bavaria,

25:29

We double and triple the thickness of the doors. Inside, if you look inside here, I have a full shower. So everybody says, oh, you. It looks like a real shower with like the handle and everything. Everything. So you don’t have a wet head. I don’t know, but I can I have I can hook up a tube that goes to the faucet that then can create little shower. But I’m more just jumping the ocean. Not me, too. Every one of my boats, I make them all 100 percent electric with freshwater flush.

26:00

So there’s never a boat smell. Yeah, that is an issue. And that is one of the reasons why I’m looking for a.  it’s the two foot and stinky rule when it comes to old boats. Hear you. This table is designed to drop down. So now I have another oversized area that I can have two people sleeping out here quite comfortably. Party lounge. Yes. Another head up here in the front. I have another head up here. That’s just a shower. Right. And the heads on this side. Little  side. OK. So on one side I have the shower and the other one I have the head.

26:29

That’s good. That’s good to separate those things. Right.  I have a queen size bed up here. I love the windows. There’s windows everywhere. Yeah. The natural light coming in really is pretty spectacular. Yeah. And then that’s about it, you know, overall. What does this puppy run? What does it got with the bag? She sells for about $500,000. Really? That’s a I would have thought it’d be a lot more based on… Yeah.

26:53

You have easy access to all of your all of your support systems. So he just pulled down one of these wooden panels. It looks like part of the decor. And then all of sudden you’ve got your switches and panels and then everything used to be. Remember switches, switches, switches. You ask me. Remember, this is what I have. Oh, that’s right. I forgot.  Well, you push buttons. This nice. Yeah. Here. And then I can go up here and it tells me all of my what my fuels are, what my what’s in every one of my system. How much fuel does she hold?  She holds 87 gallons.

27:21

I have an inverter so that when I’m off the hook, I hit the inverter and the house then turns into a complete 110 system based on the inverting system. You got AC in this puppy too? I have heat, air and generator. Okay. So bright in here and all the recessed lighting up at the top. Yep. All you need is a disco ball.  Microwave oven, which is always nice. Three burner gas stove. And then you have this.

27:46

push button for them to come up and out. Then you have a hood if you’re cooking. Oh, there’s a hidden hood underneath the piece of cabinetry. That is cool. It’s got all charcoal in it, so it’s going to absorb hopefully as much smell as possible and any kind of smoke. out, it just grabs it in its own thing. You got it. Well Trent, this is awesome. Well, I hope I’ve given you enough information. Yeah, I just had to find a dock big enough. That’s easy. I can find those docks for you in a heartbeat. Awesome. Well, we got some new people coming in. These are the new buyers.

28:15

Good we’re just recording for good jives you ever heard of latitude 38? I haven’t.  All right well it’s a sailing magazine been around for 40 years and we’ve got a podcast and  talking about West Coast sailing so  Trent I’ll let you handle this because he just gave me the tour and all kinds of good stuff thank you sir any final words to the Latitude Nation the magazine that you’re loving you’re reading you want to share anything with them? Don’t ever stop reading that magazine. I love it all right well Trent take care of these fine folks  this boat looks perfect for you.

28:43

Yeah, ask him for the 10 % Good Jibes discount. We’ll see if he does it.  Alright, thanks, Trent.  Only $500,000. I  just need to find a slip.  This is amazing.  I want this boat.  I’m sorry, Bingo.  I hope you can’t hear me.  But,  you know, our time has been amazing.  And, uh, I just might have to upgrade.  That’s a lot of boat for $500,000.  I’m just taking a moment and looking at it.  Yes.

29:13

Okay, on to some more boats.

29:18

I’ve now stepped onto a 50 foot, two inch beam, 16 feet. Mike, you’ve got the microphone. You’ve heard of Latitude 38? Yes, I have. I love Latitude 38. I read it all the time. Who’s your favorite employee at Latitude 38? John Art. There you go. Yeah. Hi, John. Hope you’re doing well. Mike Dorgan here. Yacht Broker San Diego, obviously in Newport Beach. It’s a Newport International Boat Show.

29:45

Well, how’s the show going for you so far, Fantastic. I saw you just signed some paperwork. that a closed deal? Well, you know, it’s a client that’s looking for a specific boat. And of course, I go and I serve my clients well by finding exactly what they want, not what I have to sell. I like that. So I like to take their information. I follow up with them after the show. We might not sell a boat at the show, per se. You’re selling the dream. One boat at a time. That’s my motto. I sell the dream  one boat at a time. Well, you have a unique opportunity to speak to the entire Latitude 38 nation here through Good Jive.

30:15

Tell us about how many boats you have, what’s going on here. Tell us a little bit of scoop. I mean, we can take a tour of any boat you want. This is it. You have it. The world is your oyster. Yes. Well, first of all, if you’re thinking about boating or thinking about sailing, whether it’s power or sail, I encourage you 100 % to go to a boat show. At the boat show, at will, you can board 200 or 300 boats. 200 or 300, yes. I don’t know how many boats are here. You probably know better than I do, because I’m just on my lovely geno’s.

30:41

Here we have a Geno 440, we have a Geno 410, a Geno 490, and a Geno 60 is what we’re focusing on. And that’s what our dealership here at Marine Service Center sells. But if you’re looking at- And if you didn’t know, then you Geno. Exactly. If you don’t know, you Geno.  Geno. Geno? Yes, and that is a sister ship company to Beneteau. A lot of people know about Beneteau’s uh beautifully built boat. Great sailing, easy to sail. Super cheap.

31:12

Nothing’s cheap. Very reasonably. Very, very reasonably priced. But no, but as far as the boat show goes, lots to do here. They’re even taking people out sailing for free. Really? A of power. As a matter of fact, this boat’s going out right now. Oh, I see them, The 35 foot sailboat over there, they have three sailings today. You can actually do that through sail time over here. They’re promoting it. Where’s sail time? Is Chris Gesture here? Yeah, Chris Gesture. As matter of fact, just saw him having a slice of pizza earlier, but he’s here.

31:39

I had him on the podcast recently, learned all about his stuff. Yeah, he does a great job. We’re actually in a partnership with them. They’ve chosen the Geno’s as their boats that, for example, if you want to do a partnership.

31:50

Yes. You can actually purchase a Geno and have other partners and spread it. Fractional ownership? Yes. Fractional ownership, one eighth the cost. It becomes a tax write-off as well. That’s correct. That’s correct. You can amortize it over a five-year period or take it all in one lump sum. And he’s figured out all the business brains behind it. He does. It’s tried and true. He’s been doing that for a number of years. I’ve known Chris personally for over 25 years. We used to work together at H &S Yachts back in the day.

32:16

It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing this close to three decades. Yeah. Well, I mean, that means that you’ve enjoyed the time. Have you always been selling in boats? Is that your deal? Yeah, I’ve been a yacht broker, yacht salesman for 30 years. Did you grow up, wanted to be a yacht broker? How’d you fall into it? You know what? just, I would race sailboats around the world. I did four Olympic campaigns. I was an eight time member of the US sailing team. Hot damn. And I live in San Diego and I was in sales and someone asked me, he Hey, you should sell yachts. And I started as a broker and then later.

32:45

worked for the Beneteau dealership and sold a ton of Beneteau’s and now  I’m Geno’s. So I’m blessed. For those that don’t know and you, Geno, the difference really between the Geno and the Beneteau,  is it just, I mean, we say sisters, it literally like cut from the same thread. It’s just different, they price different, different vibe. Is it just to double the marketplace? I mean, what’s  the scoop behind them? Yes. Well, that’s a great question. First off,

33:13

Group Beneteau owns Beneteau, they own Geno, they own CNB, they own Vauquiez, they have  also a couple of other companies that have nothing to do with boating.  Each one of those companies are separate companies.  For example, they use separate dealers, different dealer networks, different designers,  but they’re all built sometimes even under the same roof.  But they’re completely separate.

33:42

separate marketing, like I said, separate dealerships. And the Geno’s and the Beneteau are about on the same level as far as quality. Some people would argue one or the other. I’m not going to go into that at this time. Obviously Geno’s are better. You can say that. Well, I’m saying that out of honor for you. Yes. Well, you don’t have to do it out of honor for me. They’re both great boats. I personally owned a Beneteau for a number of years.

34:05

I do a lot of sailing on geno’s. What  about the Oceana’s 35.1? I have my eyes on that. I have a 1977 Cal 34 right now. Yes. I love her to death, but she… It’s time. It’s time.  Yes.  I mean, I started my own Ginger Marine mechanic company because no one would fix it during the pandemic. So like now I know every single rusty bolt on the machine. Yeah. But you know, we’ve got just the ice box and uh I like that she’s no frills. Yes. But I also would love to have

34:35

the transom axis, and that’s what gets me that. Yes. And the 35’s. a very small transom on the cowl 30. Yeah. But the cockpit is amazing. Yes. Well, if you like steering in the middle of the cockpit with a helm, right? With a tiller. Right. Right. This is true. But the nice thing is you could put the tiller vertical and you have voila, a sitter. Yes. Well, I have a steering wheel in mine. Yeah. So it’s kind of nice. Oh, nice. OK. But it’s just the jump to the next level is a big jump, right? When you get 40 years old to something that’s sort of newer. Yes.

35:03

So what year  is the Beneteau you’re looking at? The cheapest ones possible, which are the oldest ones. old 350 ones? The ones with the primary winches on the cabin top? I think they are. Probably, yeah. Yeah, for me, that’s a non-starter because I like to have the helm next to the winch or at least in the cockpit. So when you tack the boat, if you’re sailing yourself, you can tack the boat freely. I think I need to talk to Chris Chester and just get a big one and ride it off and turn it into business and all that. Absolutely. What’s nice is you can share your cost.

35:33

You know, with eight or seven of your closest or nearest or furthest friends, not even friends,  business partners, so to speak. Now, do you find people getting into  this size and caliber of boat off the gate  or you do?  as a matter of fact, I just sold a Geno 380 back in November. OK, met this gentleman over a month. I showed him a bunch of different boats, showed him some different options, and his first boat was a brand new Geno 380.

36:02

As a matter of fact, he didn’t even know how to sail. OK. He didn’t know how to sail. I did about 10 sessions with him, teaching him. We started off literally port and starboard. OK. Four and a half. So you’re saying there’s hope for everybody. Anybody who does not know how to sail, you can do it. Yes. With the way they design the boats now and the way they build them, including bow thrusters, winches that are right in front of the helm with spin locks, you got the main and the jib on both sides. So it’s.

36:30

Very easy to maneuver the boats with the design with the twin rudders, the twin helms, the roller furler mainsails, roller furler genoas. Anybody literally can learn how to sail in short order. They just got to cash flow it, that’s all. Well, that’s correct. And I try to find out what people are comfortable buying the boat because I always say, you want to own the boat. You don’t want the boat to own you. Yeah. Now, I mean, even from a fine, I’ve always liked to buy things cash and you can do that when they’re 40, 50 years old. Yes. But what’s the financing market like now for a

36:59

for a boat. Well, good news. Financing right now has gotten lowest, and it’s the lowest now since 2008. Really? Which is great Even though the interest rates are kind of high and inflation, like boat financing? Guess what? Interest rates are high. But if you qualify, for example, at the boat show right now, we have a 5.99 % rate for, let’s say, the boat has to be within 20 years old, certain amount of number. parameters. Certain parameters.

37:26

And with Genoa, if you were to buy a Genoa to show, we have a 399 rate, 3.99 % rate, APR, of course, on approved credit. But do you have to come in with a certain amount, kind like a house? You to have it down to positive. It’s got to be LTV for the boat because it’s collateralized. We find that we get the best rates between 20 and 30 % down. OK. So if you pay 20 to 30 % down, and I advise my clients,

37:49

even if they want to put 50 % down, let’s get you qualified at 20 % down. See what it looks like. See what it looks like. Plus the lender is going to want to loan you as much money as possible once you’re qualified. And then we go from there. So sometimes at closing, people decide to put more down. It’s not a problem. We adjust the numbers and you can put more down. What about insurance? So I’ve heard the word on the street that,  but I mean, I guess that’s maybe more for me in an older boat. They’re getting harder to insure. Yes, I will tell you. I don’t sure code it. And as funny as a broker that  I serve everyone.

38:17

my entire life. I have to sleep at night. I tell people when they’re looking at certain price point boats, certain ages, I’m like, look, let’s before we get to the sea trial survey stage, let’s make it off on a boat. But one of the first things I start doing is getting them qualified for insurance. yes. like a ride with finding for whatever. Because you don’t get insured, and then it’s literally a hole in the water. That’s absolutely correct. And as a matter of fact, if clients are eager and want to buy a boat and they want to sign off on the boat, I actually say, let’s

38:47

Include this in the as is where is sign off so you act so you I actually put it in the contract that they have to have approved Insurance before we move to close. Yeah, that protects the buyer Yeah, and on some cases I get insurance before even make an offer on a boat like right now for example  If you’re buying a wooden boat,  it is hard to get insurance for wood boats right now Now the good news is that’s getting a little bit better

39:12

It was really bad about a year ago and also older boats for example as well as market insurance. I had to go get a boat survey done just to know just even renew my payment with them kind of stuff. as a matter of fact I I sold a beautifully rebuilt refurbished Cal 36 famous San Diego boat and won hot rums it’s called the blue bus it was built in 1966. Love it. Even though full refit new engine all grip hull.

39:40

you know, taller rig with  all kind of everything, dumped everything into it. Yeah. Marina still made the boat leave after it sold. Even with all that, even though they had been paying there for 10 years. No. Why? Just because of insurance? Because of the age. The age of the insurance. got insurance on it. Fine. It was a 50 year old boat, but it actually surveyed out perfectly. Wow. Well, not perfectly. No boats. Perfect.  Except for my boat. Yeah. But she’s not. That was a safe harbor marina. And so they said, unfortunately, sorry, because of its age.

40:09

We can’t let it stay. Yeah. So that’s crazy. You have to think about that, too, if you’re looking at older boats. Well, the only ones I can afford in the range of the OCEAN is 35.  They are older.  you’re not talking older than 25 years, are you? I don’t know. I’d like to pull something off for like 50 grand. And that’s like the bottom of the barrel, like just, and they’re not even that impressive. And then this is where I’m thinking, all right, do I leverage harder?

40:35

Well, actually, I mean, if you’re looking between 50 and 60 grand, you can find a nice like Catalina 340 or a Catalina 320. I know. But 60 grand boats. Well, those also have. Well, that’s. That’s true. Yeah. And those are good quality boats. The Yanmars, you know, little nice little 20 horsepower banger, you know, they’ll probably have six to 800 hours on them. You check your exhaust elbow. They’re pretty I mean, they’re pretty bulletproof. Yeah, that’s a that’s a value boat that I.

41:01

If someone’s looking for a 50 grand boat. I a lot of Catalina. I spend a lot of time at Big Geiger Cove sailing over there all the time. Yeah, you want to get a Mark II. Okay, you want to get a Mark II. So that has the open transom, you know, so you have more access for your on and off your dinghy or swimming or whatnot. But as long as you get a Mark II, whether it’s a Catalina 34 or the 320, that’s a great $50,000 boat. It’ll get, you know, you’ll have fantastic resale value if you fix it up. Insurable. And insurable. But what if I want to buy this boat?

41:31

What a size is this one we’re on? This boat’s basically 40 feet long overall in the hull length. With the bow spread, it’s about 42 feet. I was going say, it looks bigger than 40. You know what it does? And that’s the way they designed the boats. And that’s one of the neat things about Do you count this extra drop swim step as part of it, or is that just Well, we’re not going to measure that boat that dropped, right? That’s going to cost you an extra $3 a month. So we’re going to take that swim step, which you’re pointing to, which is a massive 3 foot by 8 foot wide swim step that folds down.

42:01

When they get the tape measure out at your dock masters, you’re going to have that up in the upright position. Nice. Well. But yeah, we could put you in this boat today and your insurance, believe it or not, on a new boat is very reasonable. We’re talking like $1,500 or $1,800 a year. Really? Yeah. And again, they’re going to check your insurance. Where’s the price tag on it? What’s the boat special on this? So the boat show special on this is $484. $484. And that’s sail away. That’s including tariffs. That’s including shipping. That’s including freight and commissioning and.

42:31

bottom paint and diesel and detail and cleaning. we do a complete walkthrough. We take you out sailing, show you how to use the boat, take it through its paces. And that’s delivered in San Diego, California. Well, I’m in Huntington Harbor, so I’m going have to tabernacle the damn mast, which is going to cost me a little bit more, too. Yes. Are there any new boats with tabernacles? Negative. Well, yeah, I mean, sure, you could get a Mariner.

42:58

You know, or a day sailor, they have tabernacle mass. Melgus 24s have tabernacle Well, I chop mine off. 20s, know, harbor 25. Yeah. Unfortunately, this boat would not work for you because the rig has its swept back spreaders. So you can’t even… So any boat, any boat, regardless, if it’s got swept back spreaders, which nobody makes basically horizontal spreaders, if there’s swept back, you can’t tabernacle because as soon as you lower it back, it’s going to…

43:28

go back and forth. Right. So they have to be in line spreaders. Yeah, I just need one with it. just a button that just comes down. I mean,  we’ll figure this out. Right. Well, this has been great talking with you, Mike. Do you have any advice for people who  have never been to a boat show? Because I think that’s kind of a fun takeaway. I think people think about it. But people are literally just like, take their shoes off and walk on anything. And there’s hundreds of boats. And it’s a great, it’s hard. As a sailor, I have not been on very many sailboats, right? Because even people in my club I’ve seen, it’s just.

43:58

Sometimes the boat is a private space when somebody owns it. But this is like, come on, check it out, sniff around. Yes, this is a great opportunity. Let’s say you’re a golfer, or you play tennis, or paddleboard, or, you know, swim. Foil board? Yeah, whatever. Anyways, I’m into that, yeah. Try it. Exactly. No, it’s a great opportunity to come and see. I mean, I don’t know, what, $1 billion worth of boats here? I don’t know what the numbers are, but you can see so many boats.

44:23

And it’s a great way to educate yourself too. And you can also meet some very knowledgeable brokers. um I encourage anyone thinking about it,  align yourself with a local broker  that can actually help you decide whether you want to buy a boat or not, for example. It’s not maybe for everybody.  But certainly by being here at the Boat Show, you’re to be able to take a look at a lot of different types of boats. Power, sail, big, small, fast.

44:50

extremely ridiculously expensive on down to a $100,000 skiff. I mean, when you look at something like this for a half million and then you look at some of these power boats, they’re like 3.7 and it’s crazy. And again, it goes back to one of the first things I do when I sit down with my clients is I find out where they want to be price point wise. I want them to be comfortable. And yes, you can do the same exact thing on a $3.7 million a dollar boat, but you can’t a half million dollar boat. It just depends on what level

45:19

invested you want to be in your boating. And look at this. I picked up your visitor card. I’ve never seen this. This is pretty cool. So visitor card and then you’ve got the location, name, address, all the info. And then there’s a little thermometer that says like cold. Don’t bug me. Luke warm. Keep me on your mailing list. Warm within a year. Hot buying soon. Hot three exclamation points. I’m buying a boat this month. Yes. That’s cool. Yeah. That’s something we do just to go ahead, guys. Come on aboard. Welcome aboard.

45:48

Yeah, I’m just writing a little podcast show special show special when you come back up We’ll ask you what you think about it. My name is Mike. If you have any questions, let me know watch your stuff your mic as well  Max Max Max Mike No, so anyway, so that’s uh, I certainly don’t want to bug clients You know, there’s an old country song that goes like if the phone don’t ring. It’s me  So I certainly don’t want to bug anyone But if they let me know hey, I’m interested or I’m hot, you know get back in touch with me because I want to spend about

46:17

the right appropriate amount of time on them based on their interest level. Yeah. That makes sense. encourage people to come out if they’re not in the market for a boat, if they’re just spending an afternoon on the water looking at boats, absolutely. Come out to the boat show. It’s the best bang for the buck. Literally for a day, you are boating on incredible, like you said, million dollars boats. Yeah, the access. You just get to go on and hang out on these  crazy…

46:44

pieces of machinery. Yeah, we have a boat show coming up in June in San Diego. And the fantastic thing about this versus, a boat show  in Miami or a boat show in Fort Lauderdale, a lot of those boat shows, you can’t get on board the boat unless, you have an appointment, unless they’ve income verified you. Really? So here, you can get on, I believe, 95 % of the boats here without having $10 in your checking account. That’s cool. Yeah. So it’s not as snooty as, on the East Coast.

47:14

Right. Or Dusseldorf or Paris Boat Show or Monaco or whatever. Yeah. Come out here to Newport Beach. We’re out here one more day tomorrow on Sunday. And we’d love to have you come on out and check out the boats. Sweet. Well, Mike, I’m sure John is going to be super stoked to hear all of this. Yeah. And I’m excited for you to sell this to Max. Max is going to buy the boat.  What do think? Here you can pet  Max. Grab the microphone. Hey, Max. Here you go. You just say hi. This is this is have you ever heard of Latitude 38, the  magazine?

47:43

No?  Okay, Max is doing the no. Would you like to say  what you’d like? are your thoughts and impressions of the boat? We’re  on a podcast. It’s not live, it’s recording, but. I really appreciate this type of event. Yes.

47:57

the salary or the income. We were just talking about that. price point of this event being 50 bucks, anybody can come walk and see  these different boats. mean, it’s amazing. Yeah, it’s really amazing. So if you were going if if if you had all the money in the world, which boat would you guys decide to buy? Honestly, Max has his captain’s license, so I’m like deferring to him on these decisions. I’m just happy to be on. OK, Max, just point to it. You don’t have to talk. Point to it.

48:27

I think  sailing boat  is the nice sailing yard is the nicest. Yes, but if you have your family on board you might go for a vessel.  Yes, it’s lot of work. Yeah, it can be.  Yeah, and it’s great. I heard your point about the East Coast being a little bit snooty about this type of thing.  We’re actually from the East Coast and we plan on moving back to the East Coast. So, I mean, I’m glad that this event is going on so we could see the potential. mean, yeah.

48:56

I really appreciate it. mean, Max was the one like this is is the kind of boat that he wants to see. So that’s why we just need to get one for you and then one for the family.  Well, thank you guys so much for  sharing. Enjoy the rest of show.  All right. All right. Thank you again, Mike. Appreciate it. All right. You bet. Hey, say hi to John again. And thanks for all you do. We love Latitude 38. Yeah. Any final message to the Latitude 38 nation? You’re you’re you just my only message to them. Keep the letters coming. We love reading them.

49:26

Keep sailing, keep doing your thing, and keep sharing it with the world. And hey, go to a boat show if you’re first time on this channel. Go and check it out. You will not be disappointed. And hopefully we’ll see you on the water soon. All right. out. Final question. This boat seems like it’s been leaking the whole time. it  something? No, you’re very observant. It is not leaking, but it’s very observant. That’s actually our air conditioning. OK. So obviously it’s a warm day today, so we run the AC on these boats, and that’s the compressor running.

49:55

water through the air conditioner condenser and that’s what you’re hearing. We’re not sinking. Yes. We’re in style. cooling. We’re cooling. All right. Thanks Mike. Appreciate it buddy. All right. Hey nice talking to you. All right. Adios.

51:11

Have you heard of Latitude 38, the magazine? Oh, of course. Everyone’s heard of Latitude 38. What do you think about it? Do you like it? Love it? Well, I met the founder of it. He and I were both in Paris for our last night. Oh. Several years ago. And we see this American flag boat, my wife and I. I go over and start talking to him. And over comes walking this monster of a man. And sugar in the middle of Paris, the founder of Latitude 38. The big kahuna. Yeah. Yeah. That’s so cool. That’s awesome. Well, we have a podcast called Good Jives. Yeah. And that’s what this is.

51:41

You’re kind of on the good guys podcast right now  and Chris was on it recently. We had a great podcast. And so, yeah, ah I’m excited to check it out. So it’s going good for you guys. Yeah, we’re doing really well.

51:52

I work under Chris. We do yacht sales and instruction at sale time Newport Beach. I’ve heard all about it. Love it. One of the five businesses that he’s got going and he’s gonna fly the coupe soon and relax and hang out so all you guys will be in charge, right? That’s right. So Chris brought me on board to be the new member engagement manager. I go direct with the members. I work under Chris doing yacht sales and instruction. Awesome.

52:13

My wife and I just came off of our 60 foot sailing Fountain Peugeot catamaran. Okay. we have world cruising experience with our nine children aboard. Holy moly. Chris wanted that to bridge the gap. People who are looking for stepping aboard a Newport but sky’s the limit.  That’s fantastic. That’s a big family, big boat. Well, congrats. Well, I see him talking over there. uh Maybe I’ll go up there. He’ll see me.  All right. Thanks buddy. We found Chris.

52:42

Everyone we found Chris at sail time. You’re looking sharp buddy. How are you? I’m doing great. I heard about sail time on that boat I’m like, where’s Chris and so we had a great conversation with Mike and now we’re over here. How’s the boat show going for you? Oh, it is extremely busy today on Saturday and I would feel like you’re in a unique position because Most people think they have to go spend a lot on a boat and then you’ve got this creative approach exactly and we are the Waffler and dreamer What they’re looking for? Yes, all these people are wasting bro

53:12

time and the brokers are like are you gonna buy a boat or not versus we are like you don’t have to buy a boat you can just lease a yacht try it out for a year see if ownership is right for you and then you can make a more informed educated buying decision right it’s a try it’s a it’s a buy try before you buy exactly yeah you just lease it you don’t have to worry about so is or do you have a number of your boats here or we’re on one of them this is a 40-foot leopard power cat is this the one that we can bring 12 people on the on the boat for the speakership at sea you sure can

53:42

You know, since I talked with you, I did my speakership at sea.  Did it on the Grand Banks with four people.  It was awesome, half day experience. I got through about like two thirds of the content, because everybody’s having fun on the boat, like,  so which is great. And we did another one on a speakership on land. So I’ve been meaning to come and talk with you. Nice. So this is the boat.

53:59

This is the boat. then right next door we have the 43 foot lagoon catamaran. OK. And that is an awesome representation of a new sailing cat. And then right past there we have a monohull sailboat, a Geno 440. So these are all sail time boats. They are. This is awesome. So these are three of our 27 boats that we have in our fleet here in Newport. All less than five years old. Yep. And then remind me, for people who want to try before they.

54:25

buy to try. just do like people can charter these things, right? Well, we do a captain charter. Captain charter. Yes. Oh, so you hire the captain with it. Correct. What’s a half day captain charter on this? It’s like probably like 2500 to 3000 depending on the day. Perfect. So if I bring 12 people on here and charge the 1500 bucks a pop, it’s a positive positive net positive. I guess you would make money doing that. Yeah. That’s the whole thing. We make some money and have people have fun at the same time. Yeah.

54:53

All right, any advice for people who have never been to a boat show  and they’re part of the Latitude 38 nation, they see them popping up, but they might be like, man, that’s not for me.  What do  you think people should come check out here? Well, I mean,  you can  watch YouTube and  go to boat shows through your blue in the face  and you really not really understand what it’s like to be on a boat.  You really have to get out on a boat. And the best way to get on the boat  is to  lease a yacht.  So that’s what I can say is that.

55:23

you

55:23

stop looking at YouTube and actually get out on the water. Yeah, I can say I like it and we’re talking with Mike, you know, you don’t have to have your bank account checked before you get on these boats and you’re you have a unique ability here. It’s like not as snooty.  And he saying that everybody’s invited everybody’s invited. out all the boats.  We want people to come and  walk all over the boats,  open up, you know, the cabinets, look around, see what you like, what you don’t like, and then you can make a more informed buying decision. It’s all about making the informed buying decision. All right, Chris, well,

55:53

let you get back to work and I’m excited to continue to chase down how we can work together, how we can get the Latitude 38 people to come check you out as well. Because we got a lot of readers who are looking to get involved and Derek will hook you up when he comes to town. I heard you brought Derek in so you can go and fly the coupe and go do your trip. Well, Derek already spent.

56:13

six years on a catamaran cruising the Caribbean. With like a whole bunch of children, right? So now it’s my turn. Ah, I love it. All right. Well, hey, good stuff. I’m going take some pictures because I want to charter this thing out and appreciate all you do. We’ll talk to you soon. Thanks a lot. All right. And if you want to check out Sail Time, where do they go? SailTimeNewportBeach.com. Good. And that’s just one. It is five marine businesses. And if you want to learn more, go find that podcast episode. All right. Thanks, Chris. Thank you.

56:44

Is this the Catalina crew?  Yeah, you got the ginger’s backs year number two. Good jives podcast on location. How’s everybody doing?  So anybody want to would you like to say hi?  Well, this is a good this is  a no just recording so  yeah latitude 38.

57:06

Sure. Hi. Yeah, last year, same time. And then I’ve been following you guys on Instagram. We’ve been supporting each other. Got your boat cast, you’re on the big boats. Anybody in the big boat stuff? I’m like, follow these guys. What’s your name? I’m Ryan. I’m Michelle. Hi, Michelle. I’m with the Lo-Ha collection. Oh, sweet. What’s the Lo-Ha collection? So we are a bag company. We’re known for our splash proof technology. A bag? Yes. OK. Tell me about the splash proof technology.

57:35

Because I have shit that gets wet all the time. Yes, so our bags are actually made out of Tyvek, which is actual waterproof  fabric. We have to say splash proof because of the zippers, so you can’t actually submerge your clothes or submerge your bags um underwater just because of the, obviously,  the water leak inside the If you can make a waterproof zipper, then you’re onto something.  Oh, aren’t zippers waterproof?  Yes, but because you have the leakage inside like that, Okay.

58:03

But yeah, and then we also like we’ve expanded our product line. it also we have nylon now, which isn’t  it isn’t splash proof. It’s water resistant, but it is snag proof. So it’s everything super durable, washable,  lots of light weight, everything’s proof for travel, especially for the boating community. It’s like amazing. Everything. So what kind of bag is it like all kinds of bags or like your sail bag? You’re like we have multiple silhouettes. So we have anything from like the pouch where you could use as like a wet bag for your bikini.

58:30

or toiletries to travel bags.  What kind of bag do you have? All of them. What’s your favorite silhouette?  She took her  bag to Margaritaville,  carried it through the ocean to get to the sand. It was perfect. What’s your favorite bag from Aloha? My favorite bag is Zaytripper because it zips.  So you can throw anything in it and it’s protected.

58:56

And I love it. That’s everyone’s favorite bag. So it’s actually our most popular silhouette because it also fits under the airline seat for travel. Yes. Yes. And do you have a favorite bag? Yes, I do. I actually am an associate at Aloha Collection at Lido Marina. My favorite bag is the Weekender. It’s super fun to have. It has a trolley sleeve on the back and it has great. What’s a trolley sleeve? A trolley sleeve is the one you slip onto your suitcase so you don’t have to like carry two things at once.

59:26

things super easier. It fits under the seat of an airplane. It’s snag proof. It’s  our nylon collection,  which is that material that is snag proof. And it’s washable. Throw in the wash and just lay it out to dry.

59:38

Boom and where might someone get Aloha? Is it aloha collection dot something? Yes, so it’s aloha-collection.com. We also have seven retail stores.  So we have four on the mainland. We have three in Southern California, Lido Marina Village  in Sinitas  and Malibu, one in Disney Springs, Florida, and then three in Hawaii. Say that three times fast. Waikiki,  Olamawana and Whalers Village in Maui.  Awesome. Well, that is awesome.

01:00:08

Now sir, last time you  had the boards going, we’re talking about  the big wave and the little wave competition. It never happened. It was a year. Thank you so much. And how do we find it?  What is it? Where do we get it again?  Not the locations, but how do we find you online or Instagram?  Aloha-collection.com. I’m sorry. That’s fine. And is there like Instagram or somewhere that they can? Yes, which is the same, Instagram. OK. Say it one more time, because I think I forgot. Aloha-collection. OK.

01:00:37

Alright, do you want to give us an update on the Big Wave or whatever else or even what the hell is Catalina Crew? Tell people what it is. Catalina Crew is a full stack marine service business located in Marina del Rey. We do a little bit of everything. So anything has to do with the boat? Exactly, anything. Anything you could think of, we can handle it. Including jet surfboards? Yeah, all the toys. So, the Big Wave Challenge never happened but…

01:01:08

Why don’t we start with a little wicket? Let’s do the little wave first. Yeah.  I got into foil  since I saw you Oh really? Yeah, so getting towed behind a boat foiling and then got the dock start set up and then just crashed and burned until I realized I had the wrong foil and all kinds of stuff. what we say is friends don’t let friends foil.  Well, I thought we were friends.  I did fall and jack myself on the dock and know, a little injury dangerous prone, but it’s exciting. You’re flying on the water. Yeah, it’s fun.

01:01:38

So what’s the newest hottest thing in the boating world since I saw you last? Newest hottest thing in I don’t know, mean you had surfboards that were jet skis last time. Yeah. And then you had the inflatable furniture. That was also cool. So I feel like, you know, the wakeboards, the jet surfboards are still, you know, very exciting and new.  I don’t know what’s the newest biggest thing in How’s the market doing? What’s the update? Like, I mean, we’re kind of in a chaotic time in life, are people still buying boats? People are still buying boats more than ever.

01:02:06

Which is kind of probably want to get the hell out of town, right? Exactly. Yeah, with the economy the way it is, you would think people aren’t buying boats, but it’s growing year over year. So it’s cool to see more people getting out on the water. Yeah. Well, the ocean is my potion. I know it’s for you guys, too. It’s fun to follow you guys on Instagram. You’re always doing crazy adventures. And there’s always something that is fluorescent. And what’s the story behind the fluorescence? Is that just to be seen? Is that just you’re into bright colors? I think it’s…

01:02:35

You know, we just like the bright colors. We like to stick out in a world of dullness and mundane-ness. We like to be vibrant and stick out.  Says the guy with flame shorts on  a sweatshirt,  a blue beaded necklace. It’s 90 fucking degrees out  and a fluorescent catalytic crew hat. I love it. Next to your fluorescent board  with a big Kona by the side and in your hand with a rubber ducky in the jacuzzi, which is next to you on the aqua dock.

01:03:03

with the Aloha crew.  You’ve got this shit figured out.  I  live in the high life, my friend.  So the one question I’m asking everybody is, what would be your advice for people who’ve never been to a boat show? Because I think people see it and they think it’s snooty. Oh, your tip was sunscreen.  When you get here, put on sunscreen. But for people who’ve never been to a boat show, why the hell should they go show?  It’s just fun to check out. There’s a lot of cool boats here.

01:03:32

sailboats, motorboats,  just come and stop by. People are very friendly, especially at the Newport Beach Show. You can walk on mostly any of these boats and see the newest boat or an older boat and just check things out, which is very cool. Yeah, everybody’s super cool. And it doesn’t feel very snooty. It’s classy. Don’t get me wrong. It’s classy, but it feels very  open access.

01:03:57

equal access and I think that’s cool. 100%. Like this boat show, Newport Beach Boat Show, best boat show in America as far as being able to access these different boats you might want to see. Right. So it’s really cool. All right. And if uh if you need anything to do with your boat, you go to the Catalina Crew. Yeah, Catalina Crew on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, the whole nine. Catalinacrew.com is our website. Feel free to email us or reach out if you have any questions about boating, anything.

01:04:25

I met a couple people recently in Florida. They work on big boats. One’s a stew and one’s a chef. And they want to move out here and work on big boats. And I was telling them to connect with you because there’s not that many big boats out here at that level. No. And that’s the thing we’re trying to change. We’re trying to make Southern California a yachting hub because it’s so slept on, but there’s so many beautiful destinations off the coast of California to see. People need to come here more. We need bigger boats.

01:04:55

Last year you’re talking about you getting involved with city council stuff. How’s that going? Have you been like fighting the good fights? We’re actually going to the California Boating Congress in Sacramento next weekend to advocate for our mission in Marina Del Rey of bringing bigger boats  and because you got to have the docks, right? So the whole thing was there’s no big dock. So there’s going to be no big boats. Right. Right. So  that’s exactly what we’re trying to push. We have two docks right now that could accommodate boats up to

01:05:23

probably like 350 feet, but we want to build more. We want people to come. We want  these bigger yachts to come. It’s a spectacle. They’re cool to see  modern engineering marvels, honestly. So we want people to experience this and revitalize our area because right now Marina Del Rey is the biggest marina in the US  and  it’s a bunch of old sailboats nobody gives a fuck about.

01:05:51

Excuse my language. No, I feel like this is a TED Talk right here. This is great. Preach. But  we need to revitalize that area and make it more like South Florida and bring these bigger yachts because it’s just cool. It’s cool to see.  Isn’t there like limited space in the harbor? Is it clearing out or building new docks? Well, right now we have a problem with abandoned sailboats.  Oh.

01:06:16

1970 sailboats. Mine’s in 1977. I know what you’re feeling. But yeah, lot of people just leave them though. Right. them in the slip and then the marinas have to lean them and sell them. So it’s a huge problem. So we want to get rid of all that and like make it more modern. Yeah. All right. Well, let’s do this. Something happened here with the Aloha crew. It sounds like we’re selling some bags or something like that.

01:06:40

that is very amazing to bring and  I  am going to stage coach and something that I’ve always loved is having a bag that I can keep on myself and with me so our hip pack  and we like to do it across our body which is something that is amazing to have because it’s waterproof material so if you’re in the front people are splashing drinks don’t worry your phone will be good and it’s just something that’s great and it’s super lightweight and it’s super durable

01:07:09

The best part is that it was two best friends that started this company and it has blossomed more than you can imagine. It’s everywhere you see it. It’s in every hotel lobby pretty much.  Aloha. That’s great. From stagecoach to Newport Beach Boat Show, you need a bag and you don’t want your shit to get wet. All right. So bigger boats, more docks  and more bags.  Pretty much sums it up.

01:07:34

Aloha bags, the pouches that we have are amazing for boats because you think about your sunscreen rolling around,  your stuff flying out when you’re out on the water because the zipper, it’s staying and it’s not going to unzip. Things aren’t going to fly out. And that’s just great to have on the boat. Lots of people come to our store to just get bags for their boats and for everyday use.  I have a JanSport backpack that I like use for when I’m lobster diving, whatever else.

01:08:00

The zipper always gets stuck and corroded and craziness. Ours won’t. Ours is solid. It will stick. Now, there any, like, are they all, I don’t want to say, like, for the ladies or are there some, okay, there’s… There is  some for men as well.  have… a backpack, something that’s like standard. Yeah, we have all black. Like a sail bag kind of thing. Like, you know, you go racing, you do a sail bag, something.

01:08:28

Just a typical backpack. a duffel bag. Like a duffel. yeah, yeah. We have duffel bags as well. So I’ve got my Heli Hansen duffel bag. It’s got the wet spot. It can be backpacked. It’s like the perfect. Yeah. Well, ours is more perfect than the washing machine. So I think you can’t beat that with most many bags, honestly. Nice. All right. Well, you all had me sold at sunscreen. I’ll let you get back to business here and keep doing the great work. Catalina crew on social. Follow them and support Big Boats. Why? Because

01:08:58

I like big boats and I cannot lie No brother brother will deny When  the bell of the marina’s lookin’ at your face and the thing you get sprung Anyways, I do like big boats I just can’t afford them all  Yeah, we’ll get there Alright

01:09:16

uh You know what I can’t afford a boat but if I can’t have a boat the next best thing is the next best thing is aloha collection  All right way to take advantage here and West Coast sailors from around the world are now that much more informed I like the vibes of Bob vibes all that ship and uh I’m gonna go continue to cruise  Cheers guys

01:09:44

So I couldn’t help but overhear shipwreck and jewels. I’m Ryan from the Good Gyres podcast recording. Would you like to say hi to all of the West Coast sailors who follow Latitude 38 and love to be out on the water? Are we looking at pirate gold here? Yes, sir. We sure are. We have authentic shipwreck coins from undocumented wrecks in the North Caribbean. How do we know they’re legitimate if they’re undocumented? These all come with certificates of authenticity that if you were looking, you could see right below here. Oh, slick. Now, are these pieces of eight?

01:10:14

We don’t have any pieces of it. These are all four, two,  and one escudos. Okay. So this is a  piece from the Spanish shipwreck known as the Señora de la Nuestra Atosha.  So this was found by Mel Fisher  off the coast of Florida.  And this has an emerald that’s also from the same shipwreck that comes with its own paperwork.  Wow. No ship. No ship. Okay, so this is your own. You’ve got a pirate gun over here.

01:10:41

You’ve got shipwreck pistols made out of silver from the wrecks from coins and bars that we melt down and hand carved out of black coral.  This one’s Lignum Vitae, which is made out of a piece of wood from the 1600s.  Wow. All right. So is this your craft? Are you creating these? I hand make all this stuff. Well, how did we find you? Let us know where we find you.  I’m Amici Gold and Amici.Gold is our Instagram handle. All right. Sweet. What do you guys think about this stuff? I think it’s amazing.

01:11:10

Any comments from the the peanut gallery? What do you think about this? Have you thought about wearing pirate gold before? I have not but I’m game. That’s beautiful. You’ve got that. And how about you over there? What would you what would you buy? Money was not an option right here in front you. a pirate coin. Yes. All right. Well, there you go. All right. Thanks, guys. Keep being creative. All right. From pirate gold to old friends to big sailboats to, gosh, monster power boats.

01:11:40

I had fun. I hope you enjoyed. There’s probably a hundred more people here I’d like to talk to if we had the time, but I’m ready to go home. I’ve had plenty of boats today and there’s plenty more boats for you at every boat show. And there’s tons of boats for you in Latitude 38, the Classy Classifieds. So if you need a new boat, you don’t have to go to a boat show. Just pick up a copy of Latitude 38. Wow.

01:12:09

This was fun. I’m tired. The sun is taking a lot out of me. But don’t worry. I put on my sunscreen and shout out to all of our sponsors, everybody who makes Latitude 38 happen. So fun when I ask people, have you heard of Latitude 38? Their eyes light up. They’re like, oh, my gosh, I love it. You’ve heard it. We all love it. So if you want to get connected, then stay connected online. Follow Latitude 38 on Instagram or wherever you like your media.

01:12:39

You can always find me online. My website is Ryan.online. uh yeah, let’s go sail sometime. Man, this is a crazy boat. And that is a crazy boat. And there’s shoes on the dock everywhere. And the whole dock is going back and forth like 30 degrees because everybody’s walking in step.  So many boats. So many boats I’ve never heard of. So many boats I will never be on. So many boats I cannot afford.

01:13:09

But I appreciate seeing them. They are feats of engineering. And it’s exciting to see so many people excited about getting out on the water. So we will see you in the next episode. And yep, you got to get rid of all your alcohol at this point. Sir, we’re back. All good. All right, everybody still taking care? Everybody’s taking care of no alcohol above the ramp. All right, which boat would you want? I’m going go with the bare boats down there on the right. All right, how much is that going to cost? I wish I could tell you. It doesn’t even matter. All right.

01:13:37

This is why we play the lotto buddy. All right. So there you go. Security guards still keeping things fresh Everybody’s looking like they’re having a good time You can find and follow me on Instagram at Ryan dot Folland follow all of my adventures And if you haven’t picked it up a copy of my latest book speaker ship how to get your speaking ship shape You can go to Ryan dot online forward slash speaker ship and if you’re interested in having an opportunity

01:14:05

to go out for a half day or a full day on a boat with me and some other people to talk about speaking,  about speakership, and about how you can use your voice as the most powerful thing in all things.  Well, you should check out  ryan.online and  get on the list for my next Speakership at Sea workshop.  And if you want to start on land, we can do that too. All right, there’s tons of people coming in and out.  I got to focus. I can’t do this talking and walking.  So many people.  And with that, there’s a pigeon that flies over my head.

01:14:35

It’s a sign the day has come to an end for me and this show.  All right.  So many people.  Thanks.  We’ll see you next time.  Adios.
