Cammas, Van Liew Still Lead
Franck Cammas’ Groupama 3 (in red) has the rhumbline well-protected against his closest competition, Thomas Coville’s Sodeb’O, to the north. The orange line represents Lionel Lemonchois’s record-setting 2006 run, and the final zag is roughly indicative of the final course to the finish. More »
Cammas Takes Lead in RdR
After exiting the Bay of Biscay, Franck Cammas took a hard left and headed South, a strategy that’s paying off in the ’10 Route du Rhum-La Banque Postale. With about 2,250 miles to go Groupama 3 has gained a lead of 250 miles, although in a race featuring G-class multihulls, that’s about equivalent to a couple botched sail changes. More »
Cal Maritime Takes Top-Five
After completing one race today, the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers have locked up fifth place overall in the ’10 Student Yachting World Cup in La Rochelle. Although the race committee took the spinnakers out of the sailors hands in the 20-knot, big wave conditions, the team was able to finish fifth in what would turn out to be the final race of the regatta. Van Liew Leads Velux 5 Oceans
Three days out from La Rochelle, the lone American entry in the Velux 5 Oceans Race, Brad Van Liew, has already amassed a 50-mile lead over his nearest competitor. As the boats search for the northeasterly trades off the coast of Portugal, Van Liew’s Le Pingouin has taken a hitch out to sea, no doubt to close the east-west separation between him and his nearest competitior, Polish sailor Gutek Gutkowski aboard Operon.
