Hal Roth Succumbs to Cancer

Venerated sailor and author Hal Roth lost his 2 1/2-year battle with lung cancer on Saturday. He was 81. In 1967, Roth and his wife Margaret quit their jobs to set off on their famous North Pacific Loop about which he wrote in Two on a Big Ocean. More »

Deleon Found Guilty

On Monday, the seven-woman, five-man jury in Skylar Deleon’s triple-murder trial took two hours to find Deleon guilty of the 2004 murders of cruisers Tom and Jackie Hawks, as well as another man in an unrelated 2003 incident. More »

Bar Pilot Found Responsible for Oil Spill

The State Board of Pilot Commissioners found yesterday that John Cota, the Bay pilot aboard the Cosco Busan last November 7 when it hit the Bay Bridge, made seven serious mistakes that directly caused the 54,000-gallon oil spill that polluted Bay waters, fouled miles of shoreline and killed thousands of animals. Angel Island Closed till Monday

The devastating wildfire that raged across half of Angel Island on Sunday night was started by "human involvement," fire officials announced yesterday. The fire started near a campsite but investigators have yet to determine if the culprit was an irresponsible smoker, a careless camper or an arsonist. More »

Singlehander Rescued Mid-Pacific

It’s hard not to admire Ronnie Simpson’s determination and spunk, even though it could have easily gotten him killed. The former Marine, 23, who was medically discharged after being wounded in Iraq — "I was in a Hummer, behind a .50 cal, when I got hit" he explained on his website — was disenchanted with "real life" so he quit school and sold his house and six motorcycles to fund a trip around the world on a 40-ft Rhodes Bounty. If you enjoy sailing up to the Delta, a proposed project to improve water quality and fish habitat may affect your future plans. "The Franks Tract Project . . . involves installing operable gates to control the flow of water at key locations to limit the movement of fish and higher salinity water into Franks Tract during certain times of the year," a project newsletter from the Department of Water Resources explained. Jury Selection Begins in Deleon Trial

Jury selection began this week in the trial of Skylar Deleon, the alleged ‘mastermind’ behind the 2004 disappearance of Newport Beach-based cruisers Tom and Jackie Hawks. Prosecutors contend that Deleon, along with two accomplices, lured the Hawkses into a test sail of the 55-ft trawler, Well Deserved, they had for sale. More »
