58Sailing From Sausalito 50 Years Ago

Fifty years ago, I set sail from Sausalito's Napa Street Pier with three of my best friends for a vaguely planned trip to sail south along the Pacific Coast. We had no destination in mind and no time limit — just a youthful desire to find good surfing and whatever adventures came our way.

"Mousetrap engaged," the bow crew reported back to me. He was referring to the halyard hook, a diabolical device at the top of the mast that locked the main halyard at the top, taking the load off the part of the halyard that goes down the mast to the halyard cleat.
