There’s a bar over there too. It’s like boat, boat, bar. Ooh, there’s a bar. Lounge, Lounge, It’s definitely a line. That’s a good sign.

00:14

Ahoy and welcome to a very special edition of Good Jibes, a podcast for sailors, by sailors, West Coast sailors, to talk about sailing, racing, and all things wind generated. My name is Ryan Foland. I will be your host today and you will be joining me as I go to the 2025 Newport Beach International Boat Show. So I’m walking here, it looks like.

00:42

They just closed access off for cars and they’ve just got the public cute little somewhat brick cobblestone streets  as I’m walking along. Now, if you’ve never been to Newport Beach, it’s a great place to check out. Lots of sailing history. I’ve actually got sailing history here. You know, since my  episode with  Jennifer Keele,  I have been talking with my mom and getting some stories and  learning more about my sailing routes here in Newport. Wow. OK, we have some

01:12

crazy old school binoculars. These things  look like an ancient relic. I’m gonna look inside, take my glasses off. Oh wow, this is cool. This is about  my height. It looks like it’s vintage, but I bet you it’s brand new. It’s the Lux Optica  for all of your  needs  when it comes to crazy cool binoculars.

01:41

Alright, here’s another pair of them that  you look down into and it looks up. Let’s see. Oh wow, the palm tree is very clear. And now I’m walking towards what I think is the show and there are some crazy cars here. We’ve got Porsche turbos and McLarens, another McLaren, a Ferrari, a lime green Ferrari, a hot bright ginger orange Ferrari. Wow, these are all on display here. I thought this was a boat show. Well, welcome to Newport Beach.

02:10

And it seems as though I have found Shannon or Shannon has found me because I’m up front with my fresh press pass. Shannon, introduce yourself and congratulations on this amazing event. Thank you so much.  Yes, my name Shannon Clark. I am with Rebel Republic and I help.

02:27

put on this amazing Newport Beach International Boat Show. We are very proud and excited to share that USA Today actually just named us best boat show of 2025. Wow, congratulations. Welcome to the best boat show. officially here on Good Jives, even though it’s not going come out today. But we heard it live, this new distinguishing award.

02:53

I have not been to this one yet and I feel like if you’re gonna go to one you might as well go to the best one in town. It’s just the best. Absolutely. What would be the high level if somebody hasn’t been here before and then I’m gonna cruise around with some friends and it’ll all come to life? Yeah, so we just put on such a burrito bag. We build out the docks. We erect an entire burrito that is not there for the rest of the year so it’s quite the magic trick. You build out an actual… The royal we, not…

03:22

Not I, the royal weave. But yeah, all of these dogs are not here year round, so it’s quite the production and full blown magic trick that we, the team works really hard on a lot for leading up to the show, just to make the magic happen for these four days. How many boats are in the show? We have over 150 boats. Wow. Okay. I saw just driving over the bridge, there’s some big ones, probably some medium, probably not so many small ones though, huh? No, we actually have one of the, we have the largest.

03:51

yacht that has ever been in a West Coast boat show. Okay. Here, unbridled. It’s on the dock. You literally cannot miss it.  But  that’s a pretty fun fact. But back to kind of what makes our event so cool is that we’ve really added this awesome luxury lifestyle element to boat shows that has  not traditionally been a part of. Is that like all the Porsches and Ferraris and Lamborghinis when I walked in? That type of experience? Oh yeah. And you can’t miss the Pagani either.  Yes.

04:17

Well, I was impressed and I was like, these are really nice boats.  so it’s a full experience. Full experience.  Great entertainment, great vibes, really great partners and the community loves  it and that’s what we do it for. Well, thank you so much. And I also heard a little birdie told me that there’s somebody who is a lively captain that we need to meet. So I’m on a mission to find him at some point. But thank you for  giving us the heads up and we’ll probably see you rowing around. But on behalf of Good Jives and Latitude 38, I’m excited that

04:47

Those who are not able to make it here person will be able to  get  the theater of it in their ears. We’ll try to do it justice. Yes,  definitely. All right, thank you, Shannon. Thanks.

05:00

Is the check-in over here? I’m media, so I need to pick up my press pass. Okay, thanks so much. I have a list, let me see. I think Terrence has the list up here. Okay. They’re checking to see if I’m on the list. Well, the list will show that I’m here for Good Jibes, a podcast by Latitude 38. And we’re going to see if people know about Latitude 38. We’re going to talk to them about their boats. There’s going to be some booths and all kinds of stuff.

05:29

All right. I need to get checked in here. But welcome to this special edition podcast behind the scenes of the International Boat Show here in Newport Beach. I’ve got my press pass.

05:42

When is the last time that you were on a podcast? I usually host podcasts.  Well, this is awesome. So you’re now on the podcast because we’re behind the scenes. So would you like to say hi to everybody? I heard you were a sailor. Yes. Hi, ciao, hola, whatever you speak. That’s me.  Yes, I’m a sailor and a boater. I love these kinds of  occasions and events because you find like minded people  all around. So now I’ve never been to this Newport International Boat Show. Have you been here before?

06:11

I have not, but I’ve heard about it a lot of times.  Tell us a little bit about  you and your sailing. You said you’re a sailor, you love coming to these events, but  who is it that’s going to join me as a co-host for the next couple of minutes? Oh, that’s so fun.  I love sailing. I’m a sailor.  actually was on  racing yesterday up at the  Port Royal  Redondo Yachting Club.  I love sailing.  What’s your favorite type of boat to sail?  Big boat, small boat?  Big ones, small boat 60s.

06:40

My favorite is a laser. I know you’re supposed to call them Ilkas, but I just love 14 feet of 1980 something. Well, I think were you  there this year at the sailing GP?  Yes, I was. I missed it. I’ve my hat on right now.  I figured that’s why I asked.  I did one of these things there.  That podcast just came out this week.

07:02

I figured, I  was there last year. I had tons of fun.  I  love where the whole trajectory of sailing boats is going.  I followed them. I’ve been following them forever. And it’s  amazing. Just whatever technology they can have, it’s amazing. How’d you first get into sailing? Well, my family, yes, of course.  And  I was almost born on a boat. Me too, right? It’s easier that way.  Born on a boat. Born on a boat, almost. My mom was like, no, we’re not going to

07:32

that. Well, and as we look at this, we’re going to see a lot of power boats and  some sailboats, right? I’m curious to see the mix. I love the sailboat. I love the powerboat too, but like I’m sort of drawn to the sails.  I know  some Italian, of course,  power boats.  I’m curious to know who’s around  in that international boat show. Yeah, I like the international. So let’s go check it out. I mean, it’s going to be fun. It is. It is. It is. is. All right, we got our passes. Let’s cruise. Okay.

08:02

So we are now at the entrance. I see NBIBS entrance. We got get past security here. We got everything. Hello, coming through. Thank you. No worries. All I see is boats. Well, this is… Do you see this on the left? Would you please describe what you see here? This is incredible. Okay, I think this is… I would hope that is… This is beautiful, by the way. Everything looks amazing. I’m literally in a candy shop right now.

08:31

Literally, that boat I think I’ve seen maybe online, but to see it in person is truly impressive. My goodness.  I love the fact that now they can extend the side.

08:41

Ways,  I’m not sure how you say it, but…  Oh, when the sides come out. Yes. So basically the sides of the boat just peel off. Yes.  Should we cruise in and see it a little bit closer? I mean, that was pretty impressive. OK. OK, wait, let’s just stop here. What do you see,  This is beautiful. So I see a lot of  beautiful, amazing  boats that  are decked up.  And there’s, I guess, new technology and new sizes. We got flags coming up. We got a whole thing here of inflatable.

09:11

people walking around families.  Everybody’s going someplace. All right, which way do you want to go? We go forward left or right?  you guys are here. Which way should we go from here? That way? Left, right, forward?  OK, we’re making a left. It’s always crowd choice here.

09:29

So this is a very special episode of Good Jibes and I’m so excited to have this new host with me, Celine. Now we were talking about you growing up on a sailboat. How exciting is it to see all of these really cool boats in person in one place?

09:42

Yeah, that’s actually really exciting. Today, tonight, beautiful day out here in Newport. No, it’s a dream. It’s dreamy. Dreamy. Look at this thing right here to the left. we allowed to get on? Her name is Excellence. Excellence. Are we allowed to come on? You got to take off your shoes. OK, let’s go over here. We can take our shoes off. Good Jives podcast. Permission to come aboard. Shoes off. Shoes off. It’s always good to ask for permission to come aboard. Absolutely.

10:12

Welcome aboard, Excellence. Oh my gosh. Here we go. So we’re going to probably ask you some questions.

10:20

So are you the unofficial tour guide if this is a podcast? My best friend’s dad is a broker. Okay, what would you actually, this is gonna be interesting. Celine, would you please interview our new friend here just a little bit about this boat? Yeah, okay. So welcome. We are aboard on which, what’s the boat? This is a Sunseeker, a 74 Predator. Nice. A 74 Predator. So what’s so special about the Sunseeker?

10:46

I think that it’s just super open. It’s kind of a boat for entertainment and it’s a 2018 but it was the maintenance is super well on it and it’s super clean still in good shape. It looks like beautiful. the dive is three beds, three baths. The downstairs is super bright. It’s not super claustrophobic. Can we go out and see it downstairs? I’m just here. I’m just hanging out. Ryan is enjoying the beautiful walk through this sunseeker. It’s wow. This is beautiful. Look at this. What’s that? kitchen? Yeah.

11:16

The kitchen is downstairs too, which is different from other boats. So the kitchen is so beautiful because literally there’s a wall. You can see it’s  sunsets and  skylines, everything. This is the master,  so the biggest room.  This is beautiful. The  bathroom. Wow, this is way bigger than my TV.

11:41

I love the fact that it has open windows like this. That’s probably for sure something new. Wow, there is a bathroom, TV, nice. And then back this way. What, do you know the floors are made of? Do you know the floor? I’m not sure, no. Oh wow, look at this one. Two beds in that one. Fantastic. Little table and then this is another room. Wow, this is the master. Yeah, this is the master for sure. Wow.

12:10

Okay, this is amazing. We have a full-on mirror, TV, bedside, open windows too. love the open windows. Yes. Super pretty. Wow, that’s…

12:28

How long did you say it was? This is a 2018. 2018 and how many meters? 74 feet. 74 feet we should say feet. is look at Ryan he already got himself comfortable. Are you ready? Let’s go! So can you talk about a little bit about what we have on this panel?

12:49

No idea. No idea. for sure I see… So I can chirp in here. First of all, we have a steering wheel like it’s a Ferrari. This is not a normal captain’s wheel. We have buttons. We have four cross and five downs. We have 20 quick easy buttons here. Yes. We’ve got our Simrad. This is going to be in the AIS. And got your autopilot. You’ve got another screen. You’ve got the tilt. You’ve got the rudder, boat speed, depth, everything. This is like a crazy video game.

13:20

Looks like you’ve got your trim. You’ve got one of these crazy little avionics. Looks like everything can done automatically. You’re off the road. What would it be the first place you want to go once you get this in the ocean? Do we know how far we can go with the ranges, maybe? I know how many miles fit in the boat. Wait, me see. OK, we got some stats here. This is good. This is awesome. is, oh, look at that. OK. capacity, 1,268 gallons.

13:47

And the max speed is 40 knots.  40 knots, no way this boat goes 40 knots. You’re kidding me.  That is faster than a 24 foot whaler that I have with 150 horses on it.  No way, 40,  that’s almost 50 miles an hour. That is insane.  How fast can you get to Catalina?  Oh, you can get there in a half an hour if you’re going 40 miles an hour.  45 minutes or so.  You’ll probably burn a thousand gallons though.  Where’s the sail?  There’s sail?  Where’s the sail for the  eco mode?

14:16

This is a sailing podcast, so we love these big boats, but we’re also joking a little. Well, like on any good sailboat, there’s a lot of lounge area right here. This looks like the party deck. Oh, there is a party deck. Of course, upstairs. Well, thank you so much for being a part of this little party here. Yeah. Thanks for having me. And checking it out. Your name again? Grace. Thank you so much, Grace. Have fun at this.

14:41

Boat Show. Yeah. Boat Show. Welcome to Newport. Thank you. Thank you. You know what? What are you going to be when you grow up? Are you going to be a boat broker? I’m actually going to be a hairstylist. Sweet. All right. Well, your hair looks amazing. All right. Shoes?

14:59

Your  backpack? Oh my gosh, yes.  My backpack. No, he was already getting comfortable. All right, yeah.  I was like, you know, I’m just going leave this and come back and get it when I’m a little bit. All right, let me get my bag.  Thank you. Go and hold that. I just got so excited. Yeah, I know. It’s really comfortable. All right. Thank you so Have fun. You too.  Wow, I see all kinds of stuff. I also  see masts. I see some masts. Let’s go find a sailboat. Here we go. Good jives. On the hunt for a sailboat.

15:29

Hey, listen up. We hope everyone is enjoying listening to the stories of West Coast sailors on our Good Jives podcast.  We’ve heard lots of great feedback from the 150,000 listeners  who’ve tuned in over the last couple of years. 15:59

from sponsoring Good Jives.

16:16

You got booths on one side, boats on the other. We’re selling Shaka Love. Let’s talk to Shaka Love. Shaka Love, can we come talk to you? Hey, I’m gonna… Oh, it’s Shaka Love. Well, hey, we want to talk to Shaka Love. They brought us over here. We are Good Jives, a podcast from Latitude 38 Magazine. You guys know about Latitude 38 Magazine? I do, actually. Yeah, it looks like this. This was last month. But let me do this. me… What’s that? Portable Studio. Portable Studio, because we are…

16:45

Always on the run. you guys want to come  in? What?  Alright, so we’re walking along. We’re on the search. We just hung out with a really cool power boat. And so we’re now going to find a sailboat.

16:56

So we couldn’t help but see the Shock of Love booth on our left. So introduce yourself. Tell us about Shock of Love.  Well, hello. I am Amy Connolly. I’m the owner and founder of Shock of Love.  So we are a sustainable beach brand.  And we really focus on  Turkish, custom Turkish towels. Custom Turkish towels. Stand me through what a custom Turkish towel is and why Turkish. So yes, well,  Turkish towels are  really soft and have a weave.  It’s also sand resistant.  Wait a minute.  Sand resistant. What does that mean?

17:26

Sand resistant and quick dry. So if you go to the beach with a big old beach towel, what do you end up taking home with you? Sand and a towel. So isn’t it much better to come home without the sand and have it be dry? Yes. Do you have a patent on this or is this what just Turkish folks have been doing forever? Yeah, Turkish folks have been doing this for actually hundreds of years. But the weave itself is really soft and it’s really tight weave. And so that’s why it creates this sand resistant and quick dry material.

17:55

Have you ever, do you know about this?  Absolutely not. She’s a sailor, she was born on the water like I am, metaphorically. We’re just meeting, she’s an attendee, this is our first impression here  for the Good Jives Latitude 38 crew.

18:08

So have you ever known about Turkish tassels?  I’m learning about them now and these are amazing. Even the prints, I love the prints and look at those.  they’re,  I love the… the tassels on the end, it sort of seems like there’s a fashion element. Is there something that’s more manly and less tassels? Or is everything have tassels? Well, everything that we have has tassels. We can’t do custom ones without tassels. Okay. just… I would  like  tassels and then a non-tassel.  Right. And we do have that Is the tassel part of the Turkish tradition? It is.  Then I can’t, I probably, it’d be rude for me to…

18:38

just do that. It could be. But we can make them without. For people that don’t. But they’re amazing for any kind of water sports, for boating, for surfing. What about for sailing? For sailing, yes. On the boat. On the boat there’s not as much sand, right? Because sometimes you sail there’s rocks.  does every, like I know you have these microfiber towels that you’re supposed to have this the new age. How do they deal with drying and absorbency and things like that? Amazing. I believe that they are softer, way softer and actually more absorbent and quicker drying than a microfiber towel.  Then how come, how

19:08

Nobody has them. How come we don’t have them? don’t know. You need to find some right here. Chocolove. Chocolove. Yeah, and we can customize them with your boat names on them. Oh stop it. That’s so funny. So this is good for a gift? Amazing for a gift. So we have these ones with city names, with port city names on them. Oh my gosh, we’re like at a furniture store. Look, they’ve got that. There’s the full display and all the colors options. This is the hard part. All right. It is, right? The choosing of the color. So let’s do a real live customer

19:38

her experience here. Celia, I’m sorry not Celia, Celine,  like Dionne.  Talk me through this experience here,  let her know what you’re thinking. I’m looking for  exactly like you mentioned, probably a gift for my friend’s boat and  probably with her name,  with the name of the boat which  is amazing and I love these prints so yeah.

20:03

Can you make custom stuff or is it just these like if I did something digitally and gave you design would you give? We do. actually can do that. It’s a larger quantity. I draw stick figures and so I can see stick figure, Turkish, Turkish stick figure towels. They’re so cute. Yeah. It’s got a ring to it. All of the different like you can do all sorts of different patterns. What’s the best size to get?

20:26

So these ones are all the big sized. they’re 32, 36 by 72. And then we also have a handheld size, that’s smaller. So you can take any them to the Let’s say that she wants one for a friend of the boat. Might want to get one for the common order to give them as a gift or something. You order online or? I will, I will. Maybe come down to the boat show. Come down to the boat show. Well this is going to air at the UK.

20:56

If you go onto our website, if you contact me, it’s how you get the customers. Give me a card. going to… I also have a new book series coming out. It’s called Getting Your Ship Together. I love it. The first one is Speaker Ship, then Entrepreneurship, and then Leadership, and all the ships. I would love to have some… Why not a ship, a book, and a towel?

21:20

Absolutely. We partner together and then we can make… Do you do partnerships? you do brand partnerships? Partnerships? Partnerships! Have you guys heard about Turkish towels? I saw you ladies looking. Do you know about Turkish towels? For ladies, it looked like they would appreciate Turkish Yeah, they’re so beautiful by the way. us to be spending business. Whoa, she’s coming back!

21:41

But have you heard of Turkish towels before? love them,  I buy them! We’re doing a podcast right now and we had never heard about it. I love them because they’re light and they dry Would you like to be on the podcast? No. We’re just recording. Okay. So thank you. That was a real customer testimonial. Thank you Susanna. I made you one because I own some. It’s genuine because she owns some. Thank you. Thank you much. Oh yeah. Yes.

22:08

Oh my gosh, we should get some chocolate love good jibes house I’m gonna put this crazy idea out there when she finishes doing the sale. I have a question for you Just came up with a great idea What if we find a way to partner where we customize a few of these even if we have to do a minimum order We figure this out with your partnership

22:28

to where it’s like a good jibes turkish towel  and we can do something like maybe we bring you on the podcast if we just talk for an entire hour about the history of it, of this, of that and for people who listen to that show we can have them do something take some action join your mailing list make a comment in your DMs and then we could award them with a turkish turkish that sound fun?

22:49

Love that and a big piece of it too, what we do is we our give back is because we’re saving a lot of water by using sustainable materials. We give back clean drinking water to third world countries. So cool. Look at that. How is that for the butt weight there’s more. She’s like I’ve already sold it then but wait there’s more of her. we’re talking for an hour I can talk all about water sustainability. Alright let’s shake on it. This will be a fun conversation for sailors. a partnership. Yes. Love it. Okay something amazing just happened right now.

23:19

was leaving after our partnership handshake.  We looked at each other and she said, what color is your boat?  I was like, red, white, blue.  And then  what did Amy do? She handed me this amazing chocolate towel. Thank you, Amy.  You’re welcome. Hope you enjoy it. Oh my gosh, best gift ever. Could she get one too?

23:36

Well, I don’t have one, but I see you had a boat, what would be? It would be green for sure. Alright, oh and he’s taking a picture. Let’s smile. Cheers! Let’s get a picture. Which one do you like? This one is fine. It’s like a green-green. Let’s get a picture. Everyone who’s listening, there’s gonna be an awkward moment. We’re gonna be smiling. Okay, here we go. Turkish towels forever. Sand proof.

24:04

All right, excellent. Thanks so much. you. Oh, amazing.

24:11

Where’s the sail? It’s a catamaran. It’s just a power catamaran. Is it power catamaran? This thing is for sail? 2025 Mystic? For only 799 hard. Yeah, good. This thing has what? Like seven seats and how fast does it go? Six seats, that’s about 125 miles an hour. No, stop it. 125 miles an hour. Okay. It’s not a sailboat. It’s a power boat catamaran and you can rip it out in the ocean, all right? Just rip it. It’s got like two 500s on it? Yeah.

24:38

a thousand horsepower and that’s all it takes you are flying out in the air dude i’m feeling it all right you and me will race for pink slips on the sailboat how’s that so you race them do you also go international racing  well bahamas  is international right  yeah  by nothing overseas like europe and stuff like that it just

25:02

And you said how fast do they go? 125 miles an hour. Wow. Stop it. Have you ever gone on it and ridden on it and just tried the power? Yeah, this is just a slow boat. high speed model does about 187, 190 miles an hour. And what manufacturer, what boat, what is it? Mystic Power Boats. Mystic Power Boats. So every sailor needs this as a tender too, correct?

25:26

Definitely. This is a turn to go to. You want an exotic car on the water, this is your go-to. I have another question. How many are these in the world? How many have they manufactured? This one, this is the 17th hole. That’s where it goes. And can you customize them? Fully customizable. You can build them from zero to make it as crazy as you want it to. Can we have it in a ginger orange color? You can have it in whatever color you want.

25:56

For the amount of money that you pay you can have it off-site down if you want. I get whatever I want. Alright, well thank you buddy. Thank you. you. Amazing! Okay, so wow, that was amazing. So wow, and this place is endless. You can go all the way around. There’s so many boats. mean, literally wherever you look there’s boats. There’s a bar over there too. It’s like boat, boat, boat, bar. There’s a bar. Lounge bar.

26:23

It’s definitely a line, that’s a good sign. at these things. look at that one! You know, I was at CES this year and I was looking at these Mercuries and at the Brunswick booth and they are fitting like more horses into these engines than ever before. It was insane. Hold on, we can’t forget about the electric Duffy’s. The Duffy’s, shout out to Duffy Nation. Oh my gosh, look how cute they Although look at this really cute boat next to it which is amazing and blue and sort of has an East Coast feel vibe to it.

26:52

This is cute! Oh wow!  Hold on a second, look behind you.  Literally look behind you. Oh my goodness!  Okay, we gotta hurry up and Let’s go find…  It’s endless. Let’s go find a sailboat. I see a mast over there. Let’s do that.

27:07

And then I know that you need to continue on your day and explore and I appreciate you just randomly joining us for this impromptu double host as we’re walking through the docks. It’s been fun, so thank you, Celine. Oh wow, this has been like the best thing that has happened to me. And we’ve got Turkish towels, I learned about Turkish towels.

27:24

Okay. And hey, if people do want to connect with you or follow you or your podcast, here at Mid Show,

31:01

Hey good Jives listeners, are you looking to sail more? It’s the biggest mismatch on the California coast. There are thousands of boats not sailing because they need crew and thousands more sailors or soon to be sailors who want to sail but can’t find a boat. For over 45 years, Latitude 38 has been connecting boat owners with sailors to sail, or race the bay, or travel far over the horizon. Some connections have turned into thousands of blue water cruising miles, or race winning crews, or long term relationships.

31:30

just happy days of sailing. If you have a boat or want to crew, add your name to the Latitude 38 crew list at latitude  38.com. You don’t know where such a simple act will take you.  And just like that, this ginger’s back to one and I am looking  at these beautiful tall mass up on the horizon  and I am finding my way to the sailboats.  That’s right.  Oh, we got jet brown yachts over here. Nice little cocktail tables. Gentlemen, hello.

31:58

Well, I can tell you most people, if not everyone walking around,  seems to be quite happy.  Most of them do have drinks.  Not saying it’s correlated, but people are having a good time here on a Friday afternoon.  Oh, I see a bunch of shoes and no boat. That means somebody’s  out for little boat tour.  I see a whole bunch of masts  and a whole bunch of flags.  I’m being drawn to them.  People are laughing. That’s a good sign.

32:28

Gosh, everything looks very furling.  This is an H,  a Hylus 57,  H57? Okay, we got some traffic here, hang on.  There’s a bunch of people  on that boat.  Look at these sterns.  Okay, you’ve got runabouts that are hiding underneath the sailboats. That’s pretty classy, that’s pretty big. And we’ve got some Oceanus 34.1. Man, those are fat, look at that.  Yeah, look at that ass, geez.

32:57

Beneteau Ocean is 34.1, only $318,995. Let’s  see, I think I need to take my shoes off before I go on.  Do you guys mind if I hop in? I took my shoes off. Thank you, thank you.  All right, the open transom, I absolutely love that.  One of these days I’ll have a boat like this. Lots of teak,  center console.  Gosh, everything looks brand new. Nice and sleek lines, let’s go inside.  Okay.  Ooh, classy, smells like a new boat.

33:27

It feels like a luxury apartment in here. It’s got the settee on either side and then a foldable collapsible table.  Bedding provided by YachtBedding.com.  I see them when I drive down PCH all the time. Cool little functional kitchen.  Little back quarter berth, which is more of a half berth. Very cool.  Got the double steering wheel.  I’m just going to go out on the bow.  It’s been a long work week, I’m not going to lie.

33:54

It feels good to be on a boat,  a brand new boat  that I’m  not necessarily gonna drop the coin for now, but appreciating being on it. All right, I’m overlooking the sun  setting.  I got boats to the left of me.  Other boats to the right.  Here I am. I’m on a Beneteau with you.  All right, I’m navigating my way back.  There’s more people, more boats to see.  I gotta put my shoes back on. Okay, these guys are having fun. All right, everybody.  Just doing a little…

34:24

Little podcast. Can I come hang out with you guys? like you’re having fun on a dock that’s blown up. Yeah. Well, have you guys heard of latitude 38 magazine? Yeah. 40 years we’ve been in print publication. This is good. Jives is the podcast. Yeah. Well, what’s going on in this booth before making over there? Does somebody want to say hi from your side? Sure. Let’s say, let’s say hi. We’re here. right here. Here we are.

34:49

You guys have people floating on a dock. Yeah, welcome to the Catalina crew and a wake booth. A wake being a jet board company out of Sweden. Oh my god, right. Sorry, I didn’t see the jet board. So the jet boards are the alternative to the foil board, right? Okay, so the foil board is a great board for people that like to foil but foil boards a little more dangerous. It’s a little more difficult to ride. Basically, if you look at the bottom of this, oh my god, if you’re listening to this, this is really holy crap. This thing should be mounted. So you

35:19

even need a boat. No, that’s it.  So it’s basically it’s basically a wake skate.  So this thing you’d be able to do board slides. Oh god. You don’t understand. slides, nose bonks. This is basically a skateboard for the water. Okay, do you know about carver skates? Yeah, of course. Yeah, I rip my carver almost every day. I absolutely love it. Glenn, the owner is one of my buddies. Well, you and Glenn and me need to get on a full podcast here. We need to talk about this  because I need to bring this to uh well, I need to bring this to myself but I think everybody else needs to know about this as well.  So who else do have here?

35:49

This is Alan. Alan’s the US representative for the company. He represents AWake here domestically.  And he’s part of Catalina crew. Is that part of you? Absolutely. Yeah, we’re all part of the crew. We work this as a team environment.  So the dealer focus is very huge for us.  So we have a very heavy focus on our dealers. And Catalina crew is one of my master dealers in California.  They handle the whole coast  and inland parts of California and also a little bit of Arizona.

36:17

These guys are great partners, fantastic people, and I’m very lucky to be a part of the Catalina group. So this is a global thing, and why have I not seen it until right now? I guess, I mean, I’m not looking for it, so maybe that’s why? This is actually, this isn’t, this has been really big in Europe. Okay. It hasn’t really made it to America the way it will. The foil boards are all over and they’re just…

36:39

And foil boards won’t make it toward this way. This will be like an X Games type deal, right? So you’ll have kids competing in these, think, in open surf and waves, doing frontside airs, backside airs, flips, and… Are you serious? Is it that light to do it? Let me show you the footage. No, but like, okay, because I get some pretty big airs right now, not gonna lie. My knee’s a little jack because I went pretty hard recently and you know how we crash. Okay, they both have their cell phones out. They’re through. need to take a look here. Okay, I need to look here.

37:07

I polarized glasses. I need to take these off. Oh, he’s out in the actual surf. So he’s just going straight. OK, all right. He’s doing a 360. Look at that tailspin. Wow. OK. That was a full backflip, right? Yeah, that was a full backflip. OK. Oh, but that didn’t work. That looks like me in Marine Stadium. How does one get sponsored? Like, are you guys looking for an up and coming? We’re actually doing a big wave competition. OK. So we’re doing an invitation. a little wave competition? about a little wave competition?

37:37

Yeah, we can absolutely do a little wave competition. Because you know what? You have to be a little way before your big wave. Here’s the thing. I’m a Florida boy. We don’t get the big waves out there. So  when you’re just feeding the surf  and you just there’s nothing to surf, you can get out there  and  at least get that experience and have fun. You can carve this thing just as hard as a regular surfboard and just have a fantastic time out there.

38:02

Well,  that’s a well, they know. Yeah. So we got somebody else joining here podcasting up. How are you, sir? I like the mobile  podcast. We actually have a yacht cast. do a Marina Del Rey, California, which is like  on a hundred foot yacht.  This guy is completely mobile right here.  He’s like the kamikaze of podcast. All right.  I’m ginger quick.  You know, I’ll do one on this board, believe it or not. Yeah. OK. Well, wait. So we’re here. Let me get you a little thing there. Yeah. So.

38:29

We’re Catalina crew. We’re from Marina, California. We’re an all encompassing marine service company in California, Southern California lifestyle. What does that mean? That’s a lot. Can you translate that? Pretty much do every marine service you can think of, including these crazy wake from survey to salvage to management to charter to repairs to to to electric jet board and now retail, rentals, repair, sales, whatever. Yeah, we  are. We’re a service provider for Duffy, which is another electric boat company on Newport Beach.

38:57

You know, you see how these big sailboats, have their tender twos that suck right up into the rear. Yeah. Right. You get a duffy with one of these, it’s just like a torpedo or something like launches out. So you can roll up and then hit a button. And then this thing like is your tender too. I got you. Well, yeah. Well, what Lofty said, what we’re going to do is start putting the names of boats on the actual wakeboards so you can have that as your tender. You know, see if your boat is true, Lou. We’re the same thing. It can be true too. know, you have a third microphone. can dial in, bro.

39:26

Oh so let’s go back to the big wave competition. A little wave competition too. No, big wave. OK. Ten best servers in the world. Ten thousand bucks. Charge the biggest wave possible in 30 days on the Awake board.  And a small wave competition for the not best with a thousand dollar prize for one hundred dollars each at Marine Stadium, which I’ll have to organize, but I have to be entered. OK, so you have to be. So here’s the deal with the small wave competition and we can do it. The difference is it’s you have to buy a board to enter. How much is the entry fee then? Ten thousand dollars to enter.

39:56

Small wave competitions $10. So you’re basically getting a small wave person to fund the big wave competition. I see what you’re doing. No, no, no, you just created a small wave. We never did a small wave. No, wait, let’s go back to this. We were going to give away 10 boards. OK.

40:08

to 10 invited riders with a $10,000 purse to capture the best wave anywhere in the world and have it be voted on by social media. OK, and when you say captured, is this like a rolling tournament and you basically videotape yourself and it’s submitted that way? and submit it. Exactly. So there needs to be a little board competition that has a lower barrier to entry so you don’t have to buy it. Here’s the problem. The little board guy.

40:31

is not don’t call me a little board guy it’s a little wave competition I am so sorry that we’re talking like please talk about you I know you’re we are explicitly rated so it’s fine I just don’t want to go there right now this is you’re saying this is virtual right yeah it’s virtual in the sense you you get your own content okay so how about this do you ever have boards that people can demo yeah we do so what are you can’t take her no no yes hi yes what you were doing a podcast sat on it for the first time and honestly I would

41:00

I would have liked to sleep if my friend hadn’t slapped my foot. Oh, that like a foot slapper. Honestly, after a couple glasses of wine and sitting on this bed here, this water bed here. Yeah, the dock. I was very happy with it. But was it, what was it? It was a chair? It was a chair. was amazing. It’s called Yacht Beach. Yacht Beach. Very worth the Yacht Beach. Yes. So I think I need to add it to my friend’s Christmas list, wherever he’s at. Don’t tell him.

41:29

So I’m going to get information here and I’m going to order one online. You should also get one of these.  The electric chat board. Can get a live demo? We have a small wave competition. was going to tell you about the little wave. Where  the little wave, OK? Big board, big board, little wave. It doesn’t make big waves. Big board, big board, little wave.  So  do you know where Long Beach is and Marine Stadium? can rent out the whole Marine Stadium.  the whole thing, just private for us.

41:55

It’s like a yeah, it’s make it silly  and then we could do some tricks and stuff and then the winner might get a board Wait to close back on what are doing? So give me a date and I’m there okay guys let’s come up with a date  How much is one of how much are one of these things?  Okay,  what’s it? I mean you probably  the charge will last you forever. What’s the running time on it?

42:22

Okay, but if you ride it aggressively like me, it’d be a little under an hour and you can get up to 35, 40 miles an hour depending on your weight. Okay, that’s fast. And it looks like it’s nice in flat water, but when it’s choppy, like I was just wakeboarding the other day, Marine Stadium had some rowers, so we went out to the oil island. It was rough as shit and it was a… You put the boots on, you slide them in right there, and then you’re good to go. Like we got a guy who throws backflips on these. Yeah, I’m working on that. His name’s Flo. Yeah, his name’s Flo? Yeah.

42:50

He’s from France. He can we get can we get flow to talk with flow as a podcast? Yeah, flow is coming out here. Flow is coming. I will interview him at the at the little at the little wave competition. That’s your LW. LW. LW. Well, you think I’m joking, but I kind of am. I think I think I think there’s something that I’m very passionate about. The ocean is my potion. And this thing would be so fun. Make big waves. TM trademark. I’m just kidding. Yeah. But really, is it trademarked?

43:17

I will now. Well, if you’re in Long Beach, come to Marina Del Rey. We’ll go out on the big boat. Like I said, we do the yacht cast. Yes. Catalina crew. Our monikers live to tell the tales. So, lock and load. And we go where the wind blows. And I bet you, probably don’t have the lockdown on the sailing market. And we do. So you’re at Sail GP. Yes, I was too. I was behind the scenes. Check this out. Look at that foil making it here. But this is the new wave. That was just last month.

43:46

This is this month you can. What’s our new modicum? Friends don’t let friends foil. Oh, I have a buddy who rented did a Groupon thing and fell down on it and chopped his whole hand surgery. Everybody’s got a disaster story with foils. I love this idea. And we can I can bring my mobile set up. We can do a boat cast with your yacht cast. That’d be awesome. Yes. Yeah, our actual our last episode we had our buddy Chip the Ripper was a musician on and then we did CCO.

44:15

who is the editor-in-chief of Bowdoin International Magazine US. Okay, that is awesome. Well, hey, this has been fun. I am gonna go and actually check it out. I’m gonna check this out.  Thank you. That’s okay. Thank you so much. Thank you so much for coming by. Yeah, well, I’m gonna get your cards. I’m gonna sit in this  this yacht beach real quick though.  And I have three microphones now because they’ve all abandoned me. But let’s see. Here we go. Okay, for the listeners, it’s gonna be silent because we’re taking a picture.

44:42

This podcasting stuff is a lot of work. I think I’m just going to chill here for a couple of minutes. You guys have been great. And I can’t wait for the little wave challenge. I’m going see you guys on that on that boat for the Yacht Cast. L-dubs, L-dubs in the house.

45:00

What a day at the Newport Beach International Boat Show. Apparently claimed to be the number one boat show in 2025 and I can see why. Amazing boats, everybody’s super friendly, had tons of great conversations,  got on a lot of amazing pieces of technology, saw some serious and sexy sailboats,  and I’m exhausted. I wish I would have had some slip on shoes and I’m gonna have that be the case for my future boat shows, but

45:29

cue the helicopter right above just to create some noise as we’re closing this thing down. But really, I appreciate you all joining and special shout out to Celine for randomly joining me as another attendee  and shout out to  Shannon for putting together such an amazing event. We appreciate all that you do to bring together so many different people to really get a chance  for a little bit of ocean potion. And for those of you who this is your first Good Jibes podcast, welcome aboard.

45:59

Hopefully you had a good time and we want you to stick with us. You can subscribe to our podcast wherever you get your podcasts. And for all of our Latitude 38 nation out there, please continue to pick up the magazines, read them, have fun with them, share them, and enjoy vicarious thrills of people who are sailing from the West Coast around and about. Don’t forget to follow @Latitude38 on social media, all channels, and if you want to connect with me.

46:28

Maybe if you’ve got a good idea for a show. Maybe you want to be on the show. Microphone guy. Yeah, what’s up?  Sure, I was just waiting for Shannon to come out. That would be awesome. And I can do some coverage on it.  What was your name, sir? Kenny.  All right, thanks, guys.  All right. Well, hey, that was going to be the close of the show. But now we’re opening back up because I just landed a VIP bracelet. These guys saw me talking in the middle of the street and they’re like, hey, bro, you want one? I got it.  And.

46:57

I’m headed into the VIP, so the show is not over yet. Let’s see what kind of show they put on for the VIP. I’m guessing it’s going to be super classy since this whole event is super classy!
