Photo of the Day July 26 – Vannes, France During this year’s The Race for maxi multihulls around the world, all the entries were maxi cats. But this didn’t put to rest the controversy of whether a maxi trimaran – generally considered to be faster upwind and in light air, but slower downwind – might on the whole be faster. We’re closer to more information on the subject as Olivier de Kersauson’s brand new 110-ft trimaran, K2000, was launched from Chantier Multiplast last Sunday in Vannes, France, and will be going on her first sail today. The first three finishers in The Race, it will be remembered, were maxi cats designed and built by Gilles Ollier’s Chantier Multiplast. Kersauson, who owned the Jules Verne Trophy for some time, will not actually take possession until the factory sea trials are over. The boat’s first public appearance will be at the Interceltic Festival in Lorient from August 3-12. They expect to make an assault on the Around the World Record this winter.

in the Sunny Caribbean

July 26 – Nevis

You may have rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous – and Basil – at Basil’s Bar on Mustique. And you may have got down and funky with Foxy’s Caribbean rhythms at Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke. But if you haven’t been to Sunshine’s in Nevis, you’ve still got some Caribbean barhopping to take care of. Perched on spectacular Pinney’s Beach, with a backdrop of literally thousands of coco palms that sway in the breeze below 3,000-ft Mt. Nevis, the ever-gregarious Sunshine will set your mind free with one of his famous Killer Bee libations, and his inexhaustible music collection will get you dancing barefoot in the sand. Yah, mon!

Three Against the Atlantic July 26 – Atlantic Ocean Three entries in the upcoming 32,700-mile Volvo Ocean Race found themselves on the East Coast of the United States, while the race actually starts from La Rochelle, France. So the skippers of Team Tyco, illbruck Challenge, and Team News Corp. gathered off Chesapeake Bay on July 22, and are currently racing across the Atlantic as a tune-up for the real thing.

Pegasus Headed to the Barn July 26 – Pacific Ocean Sailing photographer par excellence Sharon Green captured Philippe Kahn’s R/P 75 Pegasus as she crossed the finish line to claim Barn Door honors in this year’s TransPac.
