The End of Two Eras: Harbor Island West Marina and the Baja Ha-Ha Mark Milestone Final Years
The year 2025 marks two historic milestones in West Coast sailing. It is the 31st and final voyage of the legendary Baja Ha-Ha, a rally that for more than four decades has united sailors from all walks of life in the shared dream of heading south on the open sea. It is also the 54th and final year of San Diego’s original Harbor Island West Marina in its current form.
For more than half a century, Harbor Island West Marina has served as the launching point for hundreds of Baja Ha-Ha participants and countless cruisers. Just as skippers will continue to sail south, the marina itself will also continue to evolve into a state-of-the-art marina and resort-style destination that honors its heritage while looking toward the future.

“While we’re proud to modernize our facilities, we’re equally committed to preserving the camaraderie and spirit that have defined Harbor Island West for over 50 years,” said Eric Leslie, operator of the marina for the past 35 years and a key member of the redevelopment team. “This redevelopment ensures we will continue serving the next generation of cruisers and local boaters alike.”
With direct ocean access, a protected bay, full-service fuel dock, proximity to marine services, and the airport just minutes away, Harbor Island West Marina will remain the go-to provisioning stop for skippers before heading south.
The marina’s new Bellingham concrete dock system will feature 623 slips, including dedicated multihull slips and a greater number of larger slips to accommodate today’s bigger vessels. State-of-the-art electrical systems will support a wide range of power requirements for all vessel sizes.
On land, an expansive new clubhouse will open onto a pool and hot tub overlooking the marina, complemented by modern shower rooms and inviting indoor-outdoor gathering spaces for relaxing, hosting potlucks, or enjoying the view. At the west end, a second waterfront recreation area will include another hot tub, fire pit, and additional shower facilities.
A central café and deli will serve fresh bistro fare, sandwiches, beverages, and hospitality. When complete, Harbor Island West Marina will stand as California’s premier marina—truly a cruiser’s ideal destination in the heart of San Diego.
The new facilities may be modern, but one thing will not change: Harbor Island West Marina’s hospitality, personal touch, and unwavering support for the sailing community—qualities that will remain deeply anchored in its culture.
For sailors planning 2026 voyages south, Harbor Island West Marina will remain open throughout the redevelopment, with transient slips available during phased construction.
