Synthetic Standing Rigging. Why Not?

We want to re-rig our 30,000 lb. Kelly Peterson 46-ft sloop Esprit with synthetic — yes, plastic — standing rigging, but almost everyone we talk to (except ‘young sailors’ and ‘old sailors’ who have it already) are telling us not to! What gives?

There are many types of polymer-based rope in use today, most commonly they’re called Dyneema or Spectra. The two that are used mostly for standing rigging are: New England Ropes STS-HSR (Stronger Than Steel Heat Set Rope) and Hampidjan Dynice Dux. “In the end, Dux is like anything new. There is a distinct learning curve, and there will be skeptics and believers,” said John Franta, a rigging engineer with Colligo Marine

A few of the reasons sailors are making the switch are: Anyone with a fid and access to some patience can rig their own boat; the rig is seriously lightened; it doesn’t rust, and you can keep a whole duplicate of the rig in your bilge; it’s two to five times stronger than the steel it replaced; and, did I mention, you can do it yourself without expensive and heavy equipment? Also, unlike a swage, the splices and thimbles are fully inspectable.

An article by the International Institute of Marine Surveying states, “The impressive tensile properties of these fibers make them ideal for standing rigging. [The technology] has allowed [Dyneema] rigging to be provided by smaller rigging companies or done by individuals as a DIY project.”

So, why wouldn’t you do it? Most commonly sailors cite that plastic rope stretches, chafes, and is susceptible to UV rays. All of these reasons can be addressed. For stretch, the heat-treated fibers in Dux and STS-HSR have had all the constructional elongation removed before it goes onto the spool. Some of it comes back when spliced for standing rigging, but that can be accounted for and taken back out by setting it with a winch.

“Actual working elasticity, at least if sized correctly, is less than that of 1×19 wire rope,” said Brion Toss, author of the Riggers Apprentice. I also spoke with a local Bay Area rigger, and he saw a 50% reduction in breaking strength over a 12-hour period when he stretched a 40-ft length of Dux to 30,000 lbs. I can’t imagine any chainplate staying attached to a hull when that much pressure is applied!

For chafing concerns, the rope can be dressed with chafe gear like — in this case — heat shrink tubing, by splicing on a Dyneema cover, or, if you’re really salty, one could serve and parcel the rope like we’ve done for thousands of years. For UV concerns, you could dress the whole rig like above, or, just keep an eye on it — as you should anyway. Just like all rope, there are visual signs of stress and age. “It is also much more resistant to UV damage than, say, Dacron or nylon.” Toss said. When chafe or UV becomes a problem, the line turns fuzzy. This is a warning sign to replace. Colligo Marine has charts of UV data for Dux. However, remember that Dyneema is two to five times stronger than the steel it replaced!

A local rigger agreed to help us make the switch, but said they were confident I’m someone who will have the wherewithal to do something about the maintenance. “For people unlike you, I would still tell them to use conventional materials,” they said.

Michael Moradzadeh, owner of the Santa Cruz 50 Oaxaca, has a Dux backstay. “I’d like to see how Dux stands up against heat-generated friction or a knife while under tension; if it lasts, I’m sold,” Moradzadeh said, adding, “Standing rigging is not something I’d like to have to learn in an emergency.”

One last question: Will my insurance drop me if I take the leap? That’s my biggest concern! “Lloyds of London have approved Dynice Dux for strength.” John Franta said.

So honestly, tell me why you wouldn’t do it? I’m still on the fence myself, but I have both feet headed in the direction of modernizing our rig. From my research, there are no documented disasters from this technology in the 12 years that this stuff has been in use.

    I just had to unstep my mast and repair a whole lot of corrosion damage. I have also been contemplating moving to dynema standing rigging for all the reasons listed. For a cruising boat (that is our plan) plastic is especially attractive.

    When quoting strength are you referring to equal weights for a given length or equal diameters? Stronger than steel has to be defined by weight, diameter or other common measurement to be a reliable measurement otherwise the equation is not complete.

      Diameter! I changed my old steel halyard wire to dyneema 1/4″ and it’s surprisingly easy to splice and has worked fine, including using to load our dingy on and off the deck when anchored….. takes some time to adjust to how small it is though after it stretches and beware of it getting away from you because it is so lightweight and very slippery! The main halyard went to the top of the mast as soon as I let go of it after splicing it to the dacron line! So I learned to leave it attached to the mainsail and strapped with a second line for safety!!!!

    Or you could go with galvanized cable, when cruising through most off the beaten track places I want to go…. there’s no shortage of working boats, tar and welders to rig up a Superior standing rigging system!!! Where stainless snaps, steel wire sustains…. although I am attracted to the amsteel products, the expense just doesn’t add up for me at this point in time but am hoping that it becomes common enough to drop in price for we little diy boaters …. like solar and wind generators have!

    I have had the Colligo Marine Dux shrouds and life lines on our 2004 Fountain Pajot Bahia 46 catamaran for over 12,000 miles of ocean crossing miles. The Dux is 4 years old now and I adjust the tension about the same as the previous SS wire, every 12 months. We are full time liveaboard cruisers and the Dux weight savings helps balance the extra spares we carry for remote cruising areas. The reduction in for and aft pitching makes for smoother and more efficient sailing. I would do the Dux rigging all over again!

      Hey Tony,
      I know from the previous owner Alejandro Basail that you rigged Paradocs Catana 39 with Dux. I’m the owner now and we seriouly thinking of replacing the dyneema after a circumnavigation and 7? years under tropical sun.
      Any inputs or comments would be fun to have.

    I stripped two of my boats of wire, replacing heavy wire with DUX, 12 years ago. A 123′ Bering Sea trawler, where I was introduced to DUX by the Icelanders who made it. It was stronger per diameter, and lasted 3 times as long in heavily chaffing areas (rusty trawler decks.)I then brought enough 7mm home to re-rig my 34′ Searunner. It’s still going strong for the fellow I sold it to, who is in Costa Rica. Lat 38 interviewed us ten years ago about it. https://www.latitude38.com/changes/Changes06-09.html

    Our C&C 38 had its shrouds swapped from the original Nitronic-50 rod (size -10, 10,000lbs tensile strength) to Colligo Dux 9mm about 10 years ago. We’ve owned the boat for 2.5 years now. It sat on the hard for 5 years before we bought it so the rig has essentially only had 4-5 seasons of use but the UV has already taken its toll. The lines are getting fuzzy. This is in New England, not the tropical sun. The lifespan of Dyneema rigging seems to be much more dependent on UV degradation than any other factor. Useable life will probably be even shorter in the tropics.
    All this to say that we still like all the advantages of synthetic rigging. Very easy to repair, replace and inspect. Now that the boat has all of the Dyneema eye fittings we can rerig all the shrouds for $600 total (Amsteel SK78 3/8″ 19,700 lbs) or $1200 for the heat set stuff (9mm, 18,000 lbs). I’m not an engineer but from our experience I would say the heat set product is not worth double the price. The initial month or two of sailing will break in the “heat set” stretch so the DIYer just needs to account for this stretch in the non heat set version.

    For those of you who care for more info on this type of rigging look up the Rigging Dr . He has a number of videos in the use and maintaining of it . Both he and his wife are full time blue water crusiers as they are now back from a Trans Atlantic crossing .

    Is the shrink tubing standard off the shelf, or does it need to be a specific type? I have read that Colligo uses PVC shrink tube, but I find that a little harder to find. Adhesive lined?

      The shrink tubing does nothing. If you want dyneema rigging to last more than ten years, it needs a cover over the entire shroud and a cover over the splice like the image above with leather covers.
