Photo of the Day

March 20 – Yelapa, Mexico

The Wanderer, the primary editor of ‘Lectronic
Latitude, apologizes for having had to be away for the last two
weeks, as he had to travel south for research on the next issue
of ‘Lectronic Latitude. Since some readers might doubt that he
was working, today’s Photo of the Day shows him ‘at the office’,
Profligate, anchored at Yelapa. If your monitor has sufficient
resolution, you can see him inside the cat banging away on the
keyboard of his computer, sweat pouring from his furrowed brow.
The photo was taken from a room being rented by Cal and Cher
Ares of the Jenner-based Mallika, a Kettenberg 41. The
couple and their daughter – the second photo is of Cal and his
daughter – were late for the Ha-Ha, got hit by Santa Anas on
the way down Baja, and continued on to mainland Mexico. For the
last several months, they’ve had Mallika on the hook at
Yelapa, considered a dicey place to anchor, while they’ve moved
into an apartment overlooking the water.

Topless Sailing in the Southern Ocean

March 20 – Southern Ocean

When Bruno Peyron last raced a catamaran
around the world in ’93, he was looking for icebergs down around
38°. Not this time with Orange. Peyron reports that
when they are making sail changes, some of the crew aren’t even
wearing shirts, it’s that warm. In addition, they’re seeing more
flying fish – which normally aren’t seen that far south.

Despite the fact that Peyron is sailing
Orange at a very controlled pace – trying to stay in less
than 30 knots of wind and avoiding sailing at much over 30 knots,
the maxi cat is far ahead of the current record held by Olivier
de Kersauson’s Sport Elec. The new generation of larger
cat is simply so much faster than the previous generation trimaran,
that all Peyron has to do is maintain an easy pace and keep the
boat in one piece to claim the record.

Out in Front Again

March 20 – Atlantic Ocean

Northern Californian John Kostecki and
his well-drilled illbruck team have once again pulled
into the lead in the Rio and Miami leg of the Volvo. When it
comes to close reaching in a breeze, nobody seems to be able
to hang with them.

Banderas Bay Regatta

March 20 – Banderas Bay, Mexico

Last weekend was the Banderas Bay Regatta,
and your hard-working editor was there. Here are some of the
shots he took.

The De-Naming Ceremony
I once met a man in Florida who told me he’d owned 24 different yachts and renamed every single one of them.
