Today’s Photos of the Day come from near
Pt. Blunt on San Francisco Bay last Saturday, where it appears
Jim Wallis and crew were temporarily having a little trouble
jibing the chute on his Primrose 50 Axel-Heyst. As the
second photo shows, they soon got the situation under control.
How time flies – we remember racing against Axel-Heyst
when Hal Nelson owned her way, way, way back in 1975.

Dawn Riley to Speak at Corinthian YC on
Thursday Night
June 9 – Tiburon
“Everybody is invited to come to the
picturesque Corinthian YC in Tiburon this Thursday evening to
hear Dawn Riley live and in person,” advises Mark Leonard.
“Dawn is one of the best known sailors in the world, having
competed in three America’s Cup campaigns, including her own
AmericaTrue Campaign, and two Around the World Races, and having
provided commentary on the last Louis Vuitton Series for the
Outdoor Life Network.
“Come hear Dawn discuss the America’s
Cup, past and future, and talk about providing access to sailing,
particularly for women and underprivileged youth. Doors open
at 6 p.m. for a buffet dinner ($10 per person) and no-host bar.
Dawn will begin her talk around 7:00 p.m. Your $10 admission
will go to the TrueYouth Foundation, providing access to sailing
for underprivileged youth. What a great way to start the weekend!
“Call the Corinthian at (415) 435-4771
or go to their Web site at www.cyc.org/speakers to make reservations.
The ballroom can only handle so many people, and space is going
fast!”

SSS In the Bay Race
June 9 – San Francisco Bay
For our money, shorthanded racing is the
most fun of all, so it came as no surprise to us that 57 boats
finished Saturday’s Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 20-mile In
the Bay Race. Light winds under gray skies kept things from getting
crazy on the shorthanded boats. In the Singlehanded category,
Steve Wonner took honors with his Wylie cat 30 Uno. Doublehanded
honors went to Erik Menzel and crew aboard the Wylie Wabbit Bad
Hare Day. We’ll have a photo feature in the July issue of Latitude 38.
Erik Menzel and crew sail to Doublehanded honors on the Wylie
Wabbit Bad Hare Day.
Light air and a heavy flood made Crissy a real bear to round.
David Rasmussen and crew didn’t correct out
well with the Express 27 Salty Hotel, but they looked
great.
Wayne Mereksty singlehanded his big and heavy S&S 47 to second
in his singlehanded division, just three seconds out of first.
The sunny sky in the photo indicates it was taken shortly after
the finish.

Catnip Cup this Weekend
June 9 – San Francisco Bay
If you own a cruising catamaran or trimaran,
don’t miss this weekend’s Catnip Cup from the general area of
the Golden Gate Bridge to Vallejo on Saturday, and back on Sunday.
No host Glenn Fagerlin of the Kronos 45 Perception reports
that seven boats have already signed up, with another eight or
so expected. For details on this totally mellow event, email Glenn at gf
at sracorp.com. If you had trouble getting in touch with
him before, try the new email address linked above.

Need Fine Accommodations for Your Crew
in San Francisco for Less than $100?
June 9 – San Francisco
The Grand Poobah recommends the historic
San Remo Hotel, just a couple of quiet blocks from Fisherman’s
Wharf, Pier 39, and the cable cars.
This fine old hotel was built just after
the ’06 earthquake, and features a bar that came around the Horn
and a ’47 woodie out front.
A pension-style hotel, it’s long been a
favorite with European visitors, and would be perfect crew accommodations
during the Big Boat Series or other events.
Who is out making passages in the Pacific
and what kind of weather are they having? The YOTREPS daily yacht
tracking page has moved to www.bitwrangler.com/psn.
Looking for current as well as recent wind
and sea readings from 17 buoys and stations between Pt. Arena
and the Mexican border? Here’s the place – which has further
links to weather buoys and stations all over the U.S.: www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Southwest.shtml.
