August 2 – Côte d’Azur
While wandering around France’s ‘Blue Coast’
a month or so ago, we took a quick tour around the Gulf of St.
Tropez. While St. Tropez is certainly the most famous spot on
this stretch of coast – and also has the worst traffic – it’s
the less famous Port Grimaud area that has most of the boats.
Ooo la la, do those French love their boats!

San Francisco Yacht Club Youth Racing
in France
August 2 – Carnac, France
Speaking of France, members of the San
Francisco YC’s Youth Racing Team – Morgan and Myles Gutenkunst,
Gray Claxton and Sean Kelly – flew over there late last month
to compete in the Splash Class World Championships in Carnac.
The team had a surprisingly successful showing against the 187
European competitors, who have been sailing the Splash design
much longer than Americans. Morgan provided some heat to the
Silver fleet, placing 12th and winning one of the races by 30
boat lengths. Earlier in the month, Morgan and Myles took the
gold at the Junior Olympic Festival in Newport Beach, winning
the CFJ class in only their first attempt sailing as a team.

IACC One Design on the Bay?
August 2 – San Francisco Bay
Not yet, but John Sweeney hopes there will
be.
“For those interested in seeing what
the America’s Cup would look like on San Francisco Bay,”
he says, “wait no longer. This Friday night, two IACC boats
– Il Moro Di Venezia 1 and New Zealand Challenge 14,
will square off for the first match race of its kind on the Bay.
They’ll start off the Corinthian YC in Tiburon about 6:30, then
sail upwind toward Yellow Bluff near the Marin shore. While we
may have to wait a few years for Oracle to bring the Cup to the
Bay, we are working on setting up a class organization for a
discreet group of IACC owners. The goal is to have a class of
IACC yachts permanently racing on the Bay. So far there are three
IACC yachts that will be based in Sausalito – with room for many
more. If you own an IACC yacht and are looking for a great place
to keep your yacht year round, contact [email protected].”

Sweeney and one of his IACC boats have
been a regular fixture during the Corinthian Friday night races.
Since it’s not as much fun when there aren’t comparable boats
to race against, it’s nice to see that he’ll have both his IACC
boats out racing this Friday.

Weather Updates
August 2 – Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
No Hurricanes in Atlantic?
We’re 40% through the hurricane season
in the Atlantic/Caribbean, and things have been great as so far
there have only been two tropical depressions. However it was
about the same last year. Then in the last three months of the
season, there were seven hurricanes and six tropical storms.
So don’t break out the celebratory rum punch quite yet.
Off the coast of Mexico, there have so
far been seven hurricanes and six tropical storms – a pretty
active season. Fortunately, all have been offshore and headed
further offshore. By this time last year, there had been three
hurricanes and three tropical storms, none of which did damage
ashore.
