Photo of the Day

August 15 – San Diego

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Dennis
St. Onge of San Diego, who writes, “This group of beautiful
ladies celebrate the end of the 2002 Beer Can Races in San Diego
that were put on by Cortez Racing Association. No club gets their
race results and race photos on their Web site as quickly – usually
the next morning – than the Cortez Racing Association. Nothing
is lacking in San Diego, which has great weather, beautiful women,
an abundance of world class sailors, cutting edge yachts – all
regularly upping the ante of the regular racing calendar.”

24 Days to Hawaii in a 19-ft Boat

August 15 – Hawaii

Bill Teplow, who departed Berkeley Marina
on July 21 aboard his West Wight Potter 19 Chubby, safely
made it to the Big Island of Hawaii last night, reports Joseph
Oster of www.wingo.com. Bill’s
wife Naiomi was there to take his dock lines. Teplow told Oster
that he did lots of 100-mile days once he got to the trades,
and never really had bad weather. “The boat wasn’t really
tested,” he said.

We’ll have more on this story in the September
issue of Latitude
38.

Orange
Back on Pace for Around Britain Record

August 15 – Great Britain

After 12 hours of calm, Bruno Peyron’s
maxi cat Orange fell behind Steve Fossett’s Around Britain
record pace. But thanks to 35-45 knot winds last night, which
produced average speeds in the mid-20s, the big orange cat is
now 100 miles ahead of the record Fossett set with the 60-ft
tri Lakota. Co-skipper Neil McDonald, who just finished
the Volvo aboard Assa Abloy, is impressed with the big
cat’s speed. “I saw 42 knots of boat speed last night!”

The De-Naming Ceremony
I once met a man in Florida who told me he’d owned 24 different yachts and renamed every single one of them.
