Good Jibes: Adventures From Sausalito to Costa Rica With Jim Shaw

This week’s host, John Arndt, is joined by Jim Shaw to chat about the best of times sailing from Sausalito to Mexico to Costa Rica and beyond. In the early 1970s, Jim and some friends pulled off a legendary cruise from Sausalito down to Mexico in a rebuilt, refashioned surplus Navy whaleboat.

Hear how they rebuilt the boat and about their adventures down the coast, the characters they met along the way, eating well on the water, and the perks of cruising and living in Costa Rica.

Thank you John Arndt for this was a wonderful interview. This was a glimpse back decades ago to the scrappy innovation and ‘make do’ found among residents and adventurers along the Sausalito waterfront. Inspired by sea stories, their yen to find more waves to surf, and gusto to turn a surplus life boat into a sailboat and sail away – well that’s what adventure is about. With no radio, no motor, no water maker and many lessons learned and skills gained it launched your guest and crew mates into the school of adventure and a lifetime of experiences.
