A Vision of 2020
Among the feature stories in the January issue of Latitude 38 is a Year in Preview. It begins: Our 2020 dance cards are filling up fast with plenty of regattas and events to keep us busy on waters near and far. (Some of these events even conclude with actual post-sail dancing!)

Resourceful Sailor Series
I had spent the summer transiting the Northwest Passage, crewing on the 51-ft yellow wooden sailboat named Breskell.
All A-Quiver in the Ebb
Back in the '80s or '90s, I went out on .38 Special, Latitude 38's first Bertram 25 photo boat, to shoot a race that used the Yellow Bluff buoy as a mark. As I knew the fleet would be pounding up there soon, I headed there directly from our Sausalito berth.

Environmental News
In late December, as Australia’s largest city was choked with smoke from the devastating wildfires burning in the country’s interior, the Big Boat Challenge, a practice race for the Rolex Sydney Hobart, was canceled due to the poor air quality.
Shootin' the Breeze
In December, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 'shortlisted' 15 films for best nature documentary. Among the potentials is our personal favorite, 'Maiden'.Â
New Year's Stories
The afternoon of January 1 brought a slightly overcast 55-degree day with fickle winds between zero and 23 knots.

Daysailing into 2020
While several Master Mariners boats were sailing to and from Clipper Cove, several others sailed in to form raft-ups. Others were already anchored there, having spent the night to watch San Francisco's New Year's Eve fireworks.
Navigator Stan Honey
Just as 2019 draws to a close, so too does this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart race. Often referred to as "the great race," this 75th edition was once again proof of why.

Epic Racing Down Under
When we say "armchair racing," you might picture scooting armchairs around the living room in an attempt to be the first to the holiday gifts. Although that's an amusing visual, this is something to divert your attention when you've had a bit of holiday overload and are ready for a yachty distraction.
Do You Like to DIY?
Like the arrival of the rain, the setting of the sun and the rotation of  planets, so too comes work on the boat.

Buoy Wrangling
Buoys, whether on the ocean or the Bay, are ravaged by big tidal flows, big waves and occasional bumps by boats large and small, and sit in a corrosive saltwater environment. The combination of forces exerted on buoys means that they are sometimes dislodged from their positions, sometimes to be found lying on a Bay shore or sometimes never seen again.
Going going gone
OK, crash and burn is a bit too dramatic. Team New Zealand’s boom boom on Thursday was more like watching someone just barely lose traction on an icy patch, then slide, slide.
This Is Not a Good Sign
Jim Hancock has been a busy guy. How do we know? He sent us the photo below of his dockline sprouting grass after our seasonal rains. That's not a good sign for someone we know who loves to be sailing the Bay.

San Francisco Bay Racing

While we were making the (not) first-ever circumnavigation of Red Rock on Saturday, a certain Bay Area boat was enjoying a first-ever of her own.Â
