Rush of Entries for 20th Baja Ha-Ha

Every May, when online registration for the Baja Ha-Ha cruisers’ rally opens, the rush to sign up is so intense it reminds us of the famous Oklahoma Land Rush. We can picture sailors all along the West Coast hunched over their computers with their fingers poised to pounce on the keyboard as soon as the registration site goes live at noon on May 1.

Their enthusiasm really shouldn’t surprise us, though, as most entrants have been looking forward to doing this San Diego-to-Cabo San Lucas rally for many months, if not many years. At this writing, 59 boats have entered, ranging in size from 29 to 51 feet (27 feet is smallest allowable). And, as always, the folks who sail them come from all walks of life. There are even several European entries this year.

It only takes 10 or 15 minutes to sign up, but doing so can yield a lifetime of memories.

Because this will be the 20th running of the Ha-Ha, there’ll be some special activities added to the usual mix, and organizers expect a number of ‘repeat offenders’ to come back for another dose of Ha-Ha hilarity and glorious offshore sailing. In fact, the first four entries are all veterans of at least one previous BHH rally.

The complete event schedule has now been posted on the event’s website, along with the NOR (Notice of Race), a list of sponsors, and all sorts of pertinent cruising info. (See About the Ha-Ha and First Timers’ Guide to Mexico.) If you need crew, or would like to find a crew spot, check out the cruising section of Latitude 38‘s online Crew List.

The Calou crew, from Tiburon, did the 2008 Ha-Ha, then went on to cruise French Polynesia. This on-deck shot of the Powell family was sent to us from mid-ocean while the boat was headed from Tahiti to Hawaii.
