"The waters of Bermuda are ideal for racing," says the island nation's premier, Michael Dunkley.

The America’s Cup Event Authority has forwarded Latitude 38 an "exclusive invitation" — which they’ve no doubt given to countless others — to attend a press conference at the Crosby Hotel in Manhattan on December 2 for the announcement of the venue for the 35th America’s Cup.

Apparently it's not necessary for us to attend, though, as an unnamed source believed to be in the know has spilled the beans to the Associated Press. That source says it's going to be Bermuda, not San Diego. If true, it's not surprising, as the ACEA announced recently that Bermuda had been chosen as one of the venues for next year's foiling AC45 competition, the America's Cup World Series.

Six teams have said they are committed to the event. They are: Artemis Racing, Sweden; Ben Ainslie Racing, UK; Emirates Team New Zealand; Luna Rossa Challenge, Italy; Team France; and the defender, Oracle Team USA.

What's Your Winter Project?

November 21, 2014 – The West Coast

Some Bay Area boatyards still allow do-it-yourselfers to do their own boatwork, especially during the winter when regular haulout biz slows to a crawl. Pictured here are Utkan and Berna Salman taking a break from revamping their Peterson 38 Brown Sugar. We caught up with them in 2012 when they were preparing to sell her after a 20-year stewardship.

Due to lighter winds, wetter weather and colder temperatures, most West Coast sailors spend much less time on the water during the winter months than in spring, summer or fall. But that doesn't mean they stop puttering around with their boats.

Winter is a great time, of course, to install new gadgetry, sort out rarely visited lockers, and do all sorts of interior upgrades. In addition, some savvy sailors also wait for an appropriate weather window and do a quick haulout. True, temperatures are cooler and days are shorter, but some yards give deep discounts on winter haulout fees, rather than see their yard space sit idle.

If you've got an interesting winter project planned — either in your garage, your back yard or in a boatyard — we'd like to hear about it. Email us here and, if possible, include a few photos. Happy puttering!

The fourth, last and largest of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club's popular holiday sailing competitions — the Turkey Day Regatta — will be run on Saturday and Sunday, with sailors spanning three generations competing in several small-boat classes. Cal 20 and Viper 640 keelboats will share Long Beach Harbor inside the breakwater with high-performance 29er skiffs, singlehanded Finns, Class A catamarans, Lasers and Laser Radials, while Lido 14s, Naples Sabots and Optimists race inside on Alamitos Bay.

The next couple of weekends on San Francisco Bay will be quieter than usual,  but Berkeley YC has Chowder Races scheduled for both Sundays, November 23 and 30, and there's Laser Sunday racing this weekend at Richmond YC. Tiburon YC's Wild Turkey Regatta on Friday, November 28, will help you work off the excesses of Thanksgiving Day.

Once December rolls around, midwinter racing resumes. Joining series already in progress, Richmond YC's Small Boat Winters will start on December 6 and 7, with Optis and Green El Toros racing on Saturday and everyone else on Sunday.
