Schooner Santana Leaves the Bay

March 14, 2014 – San Francisco Bay

Although the Kaplan family is thrilled to have found a great new owner for their beloved S&S schooner Santana, her recent departure from the Bay was undoubtedly bittersweet. She is now headed for the East Coast, where new owner Wendy Schmidt (a philanthropist and wife of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt) plans to race her actively.

After an exhaustive refit 15 years ago, Paul and Chrissy Kaplan raced this 1935 thoroughbred warhorse — which was once owned by actor Humphrey Bogart — extensively on San Francisco Bay, lending a touch of classic elegance to every competition she entered. We will certainly miss the sight of her gracefully slicing through Bay waters with her full complement of sails all perfectly trimmed.

Pre-Departure Puddle Jump Fiesta

March 14, 2014 – Vallarta YC, Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico

This week, the Vallarta YC is abuzz with excitement about the 22nd annual Banderas Bay Regatta, which it hosts as a not-too-serious competition for cruising sailors.

Last Friday cruisers were also the focus of the club's activities. But in that case, the emphasis was on sailing across 3,000 miles of open ocean, rather than racing around buoys in beautiful Banderas Bay.

Statistically, the sport of sailing may be slowly shrinking, but there's no shortage of cruisers chasing the setting sun over the western horizon. Jumpers at our Vallarta YC fiesta were in high spirits. Photo Latitude / Andy

With the YC (located at Nuevo Vallarta's Paradise Village Resort) being our longtime generous cosponsor, Latitude 38 hosted its annual Pacific Puddle Jump Send-Off Party for several dozen boats that are currently staged to head west from Banderas Bay in the coming weeks. As always, we gave a multi-part presentation on making the crossing and French Polynesian legalities and customs, as well as tips on cruising the archipelagos. The YC provided a bountiful assortment of hors d'oeuvres, and Latitude pitched in for free drinks for all, plus official Pacific Puddle Jump burgees.

For us, the only tough part of the gig is doing dozens of back-to-back interviews with the various crews. But that's also the most fascinating part of the day, as we meet all sorts of people from all walks of life who all share similar dreams of bluewater voyaging.

Puddle Jumpers come in all sizes including little Benjamin, who couldn't quite get it together to crack a smile for us. Top row, L to R; Jonathan of Fluenta, Kyle of Lady Carolina, Alex and Brenden of Exodus. Bottom: Victoria and Ben of Fluenta and Joel of Lady Carolina. Photo Latitude / Andy

Paul Moore of the San Francisco-based Ohlson 38 Romany Star is the 'old pro' of the fleet, as this is his third Puddle Jump. One of his former dockmates, Bonnie Wagner, signed on as crew, obviously seeing the wisdom of cruising on OPBs (other people's boats). Photo Latitude / Andy

In the coming months you can meet all the Banderas Bay Jumpers in the pages of Latitude 38. We'll also be introducing you to many international sailors who are 'jumping' this year from Panama and the Galapagos — a great diversity of adventurers, all of whom had fascinating tales to share.

Weekend Racing Preview

March 14, 2014 – San Francisco Bay

Spring is definitely here and with it comes a weekend's worth of excellent weather and plenty of racing opportunities. The forecast calls for temperatures in San Francisco alone to be in the mid- to high 70s.

On Saturday Laserpalooza III kicks off in Alameda. There will be Laser demo rides, a racing clinic, rigging and boat repair demos, a raffle and BBQ lunch — all for free! Make your way over to the Alameda Community Sailing Center with or without a Laser between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have any questions call Ryan at (510) 421-2914 or Nick at (415) 601-7483.

One design racing returns to the Bay during St. Francis YC's Spring One Design Series. Sixty boats are entered among the Express 27, J/24, J/105, Knarr, Melges 24 and Open 5.70 fleets.

Can there still be midwinters when it's this warm? South Beach, Encinal and Sequoia YCs are all finishing up their series.

Oakland YC hosts their Rites of Spring regatta too.

If you are looking for something a little more academic, get over to the PACIFIC OFFSHORE ACADEMY'S  Prep Seminar #4 at Richmond YC on Saturday at 1 p.m. Among other notable guests, Stan Honey will be talking about weather on the race to Hawaii. The $25 entry is well worth it. And, this year there will be a Latitude 38 Division.

Sail Fast!
