May 6, 2013 – Berkeley YC

If last week's stunning weather wasn't enough to jog your memory, we'll remind you that summer's nearly here and you know what that means…the Delta Doo Dah! As you know by now, the Doo Dah has been reworked into a DIY event this year to accommodate everyone's schedule revolving around the America's Cup. Head upriver any time between Memorial Day and Labor Day (give or take a few weeks) and you're doin' the Doo!

Registered boats will be eligible for discounts at businesses along the way, and prizes at our parties, the first of which is this Friday at Berkeley YC. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet/BBQ dinner starting at $7 and a great no-host bar. The effervescent harbormaster of Owl Harbor, Devery Stockon, will be there to give us the low-down on Delta news and author Bill Corp will introduce his brand-spanking new cruising guide, The Sacramento River Boating Guide (he's bringing some to give away, too!).

The party is open for everyone, but only registered Doo Dah'ers will be eligible for prizes and discounts, so if you're planning on heading up for some hot Delta fun this summer, pop on over to www.DeltaDooDah.com and sign up. It's free! While you're there, feel free to order some cool DDD DIY gear and check out the message board for great cruising tips. You can also pick up the official Doo Dah burgee at the party for the discounted price of $18 including tax (or buy it online for $20 plus tax and shipping).

See you Friday!

Estuary Diver Found Dead

May 6, 2013 – Oakland-Alameda Estuary

We've received word that the body of William Swanson, who owned the boat diving service Got Zinc, was found dead in the water near Jack London Square early Saturday morning. It's been reported that his wife called police last night when he didn't return home Friday night. It appears Swanson was working on boats behind Scott's on Friday, but police are investigating.

Rush of Entries for 20th Baja Ha-Ha

May 6, 2013 – Baja Ha-Ha World Headquarters

Every May, when online registration for the Baja Ha-Ha cruisers' rally opens, the rush to sign up is so intense it reminds us of the famous Oklahoma Land Rush. We can picture sailors all along the West Coast hunched over their computers with their fingers poised to pounce on the keyboard as soon as the registration site goes live at noon on May 1.

Their enthusiasm really shouldn't surprise us, though, as most entrants have been looking forward to doing this San Diego-to-Cabo San Lucas rally for many months, if not many years. At this writing, 59 boats have entered, ranging in size from 29 to 51 feet (27 feet is smallest allowable). And, as always, the folks who sail them come from all walks of life. There are even several European entries this year.

Because this will be the 20th running of the Ha-Ha, there'll be some special activities added to the usual mix, and organizers expect a number of 'repeat offenders' to come back for another dose of Ha-Ha hilarity and glorious offshore sailing. In fact, the first four entries are all veterans of at least one previous BHH rally.

The complete event schedule has now been posted on the event's website, along with the NOR (Notice of Race), a list of sponsors, and all sorts of pertinent cruising info. (See About the Ha-Ha and First Timers' Guide to Mexico.) If you need crew, or would like to find a crew spot, check out the cruising section of Latitude 38's online Crew List.

So, check out the entry list thus far. See anyone you know? Perhaps you should join them. After all, this Ha-Ha will be the big 2-0!
