Photo of the Day

July 8 - San Francisco

Photo Chris Corlett

Today's Photo of the Day shows what happens when a 40-ft powerboat slams into the concrete and wood J-Street Pier in San Francisco at 20 knots. Not shown is the damage to the bodies of those who were aboard. Speed injures and kills, so please be careful on the water.

IDEC Lost on the Rocks Less than One Day after Setting Transatlantic Record

July 8 - Brittany, France

It's heartbreaking to learn that Francis Joyon lost his record-setting trimaran IDEC on the rocks of southwestern Brittany less than one day after breaking the solo transatlantic record. One of the great things about the modest Joyon is that he's set the around-the-world and transatlantic solo records doing everything himself, as opposed to having a giant team as has been the case with Ellen MacArthur. Alas, maybe Joyon did one too many things himself. For, exhausted after finishing the tremendous record run, he put his mighty 92-ft tri on autopilot and fell into a deep sleep while heading to France. The autopilot steered the boat off course, and the next thing Joyon knew, it was pitch black and his beloved trimaran was being broken up on the rocks. Joyon's injuries are primarily emotional.

If that wasn't bad news enough, Joyon's Route of Discovery record is expected to fall tonight to Thomas Coville and the 60-ft tri Sodebo - assuming Hurricane Dennis doesn't suddenly take a slight turn.

Marina Plesons Getting Ready for the Baja Ha-Ha

July 8 - Santa Barbara

The 12-year-old is slated to do the October 31 Baja Ha-Ha with her parents, Dennis and Pam, and her 9-year-old brother Niko on the family's Santa Barbara-based Beneteau 45f5 Ohana. By the time Marina gets to Cabo, we think she'll still have that wonderful smile, but won't be needing a wrap.

Crew on Profligate in King Harbor Race

July 8 - Santa Barbara

We're sorry, but there is no space available on Profligate for the Baja Ha-Ha this year. But if anyone would like to get some catamaran sailing experience, there are a few 'shared expenses' slots open for the August 5 Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race - which we think is the most fun race in Southern California. It's almost always a reach out to Santa Cruz Island, then a spinnaker run to the finish. Cowabunga! If you're interested, email Donna with your phone number. It starts on Thursday night with some Fiesta Week fun in Santa Barbara, the 80-something mile race on Friday, and a big shrimp feed at the King Harbor YC on Saturday. There will be at least one other large cruising cat, and we're hoping for five or six.
