September 14 - Baja Ha-Ha World Headquarters

This is Sharon Jensen of the Seattle and San Diego based Hans Christian 38 'Pelagian'. She not only caught the fish, but along with husband Bill snagged the last on time entry slot - #128 - in the 2000 Ha-Ha. Bill and Sharon both owned their own boats before hooking up, and have sailed extensively. After the Ha-Ha, they will continue around the world. "Who does what?" they ask rhetorically. "We're full partners/spouses in all sailing," Sharon says, "but don't let Bill cook for you or let Sharon repair your watermaker. Enuf said?"

Baja Ha-Ha VII, the 760-mile cruisers rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas with stops at Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria, starts on October 31. For a list of all 128 entries, check out the cruising section below.

Weather Updates

September 14 - Pacific and Atlantic Oceans

Tropical Weather

Former Hurricane Lane, now just a depression with no more than 30 knots of wind, is expected to make landfall near Point Conception in Southern California today. So far, winds in Southern California are very light.

Over in the Atlantic, former Hurricane Florence is down to 45 knots well off the coast of north Florida, and seems to be falling apart. Currently, she appears to be more of a threat to Bermuda than the U.S., and in any event is not expected to cause much damage.

Racing

Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta Race

September 14 - Marina del Rey
If you can't make the Ha-Ha or are looking for more competitive racing to Mexico, remember that the Del Rey YC will be holding their 16th biennial 1,000-mile race to PV in February. They will be offering a Racing Class, Cruising Class, and Performance Cruising Class. Monohulls have to be a minimum of 35 feet, multihulls a minimum of 40 feet. Early starters leave on February 9; the last boats take off on February 17. The big fiesta in PV is on the 24th. The Del Rey YC has always done a great job with this event, so we recommend it highly.

The boat in the photo is James McDowell's Santa Cruz 70 'Grand Illusion'. The boat has been on an ocean racing tear recently, and will try to continue the streak on the PV Race. By the way, judging by the snow in the background, the photo was taken earlier this year before 'Grand Illusion' smashed the elapsed time record in the Victoria to Maui Race.

Countdown to the Big Boat Series

September 14 - San Francisco

It's 'T' minus seven days and counting to StFYC's 37th annual Big Boat Series. The long range weather forecast looks great and all systems are 'go' for the biggest and hopefully best Series ever. Certainly, the 'biggest' part is covered, as 109 boats are now entered in nine classes as of this morning (easily topping the all-time record of 95 boats set last year).

Here's the latest count: 8 boats in PHRF-A ('Esmeralda', 'It's OK!', 'Seahawk', 'Extreme', 'Bullseye', 'Swiftsure II', 'Pendragon IV', 'Wasabi'); 10 in PHRF-B ('High 5', 'Growler', 'Infinity', 'JackRabbit', 'Javelin', 'Raven', 'Recidivist', 'Scorpio', 'Surprise', and the Beneteau 40.7 [aka beach ball] 'Wired'); and 8 other usual suspects in PHRF-C. The biggest class by far will be the 35 J/105s (making this the biggest gathering ever of these popular 34-footers, surpassing the Annapolis NOOD). The smallest classes will be J/120s (four signed up, one more coming, one more 'maybe') and the SC 52s/50s (just three SC 52s and one SC 50, with one more 50 expected). The fleet will be rounded out by Farr 40s (15 paid up), Express 37s (a healthy 11 boats) and 1D-35s (15 entries, all of whom will be stabled together at the GGYC). Wow!

Check out http://www.stfyc.com/ on Friday evening, which is when the club will post the program (with courses), the complete entry list, and assigned PHRF ratings. "The office will be closed over the weekend, and hopefully everyone will have cooled down by Monday," joked race manager John Craig.

The J/105s will field 35 boats the most ever!
